The Illinois Medical District (IMD) is a special-use zoning district located just west of downtown Chicago. The District consists of 560 acres of medical research facilities, labs, biotech business incubator, raw development area, universities and more than 40 healthcare-related facilities. The District is a 24/7/365 environment that includes world-class medical centers and hospitals, with convenient access to public transportation and major expressways. Governed by seven appointed Commissioners, the District is focused on expanding innovation in healthcare, medical science, information technology, biotechnology, medical devices, clean technology and supportive assisted living. The Illinois Medical District Commission (IMDC) provides service by assembling the nation’s premier concentration of healthcare facilities and providers. The IMDC fosters the economic expansion in Illinois by supporting research and development facilities, including the expansion of social service organizations that assure the health and well-being of Illinoisans with special needs; creating Illinois’ largest emergency response and disaster preparedness community; and by fostering collaboration between federal, state, county and local governmental bodies in achieving these objectives.

On December 9, in partnership with the League of Black Women and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), we hosted “She Must Live: A Disruptive Change Response Summit” at UI Health’s Institute for Healthcare Delivery Design. 💜 Joined by public health and community leaders from Chicago Department of Public Health, UI Health, Johns Hopkins University, and many others, this inaugural session included insights, presentations, and breakout sessions where attendees explored ways to advance equitable cancer outcomes. Black women face the highest cancer mortality rates of any group, even when incidence is equal or lower, underscoring the need for urgent, coordinated action. On November 18, history was made when we were joined by Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch, Senate President Don Harmon, State Senator Lakesia Collins, State Representative Yolonda Morris, Alderman Walter Red Burnett, and many more for the groundbreaking of a new park in the IMD — the first in 80 years. 🌳 Located in the heart of the IMD, across from the Chicago VA Medical Center, Cook County Health, and the Gateway retail center, the 1-acre public park will feature fitness zones, a playground, walking and running tracks, a sensory garden, native plantings, and plentiful seating. Mind your beeswax! 🕯️ Today, the IMD Commission hosted a beeswax workshop to learn about beeswax and make candles. Last year, in partnership with UI Health, we launched an urban beekeeping initiative with Alvéole and installed a hive at one of our buildings. Today, IMD Commission staff took an excursion to the Rush University System for Health archives to view their amazing collection of historical artifacts that preserve so much of Rush, Chicago, and IMD history. 🖼️ The Rush Archives preserves and shares the rich history of Rush’s education, research, patient care, and community leadership through extensive collections dating back to 1837, including documents and personal papers. 📜 Thank you so much to Ruch Archivist Nathalie Wheaton for the special tour! 💚 To learn more about the Rush Archives, click here ➡️ library.rush.edu/archives

Yesterday, we were honored to attend City Club of Chicago’s West Side United event. West Side United’s founding leaders from Rush University Medical Center, Cook County Health, UI Health, and Ann & Robert H.
