The buzz in the Amazon is official: Native stingless bees are now the first insects in history to hold legal rights! 🐝

While researching medicinal honey, chemical biologist and Rosa Vásquez Espinoza and her team discovered hundreds of stingless bees inside hollow trees in the Peruvian Amazon. Working alongside Indigenous leaders, environmental lawyers and scientists, they gathered the vital research needed to lead the charge for the world's first legal protection of an insect.

These ancient pollinators are the oldest bee species on the planet and are responsible for pollinating over 80% of Amazonian flora — including crops like coffee, chocolate, avocados and blueberries. In October and December 2025, they were formally recognized as beings with inherent rights.

"It shows how modern science and ancestral wisdom can come together to create real conservation solutions,” Vásquez Espinoza shares.

The dog and I spent an hour in the car watching wildlife that’s built better than we are for today’s extreme cold. A full block down and back was all we could muster in the warmest sun of the day. Thanks to the squirrels and birds and the other fast walking dog and human combo who reminded us that a live stream is being out and alive. Enjoy the extreme.

This isn’t a transaction.
Nothing is being traded here.
No one is keeping score.

A transaction says,
“I give you this—so you give me that.”
It’s measured. Immediate.
And once it’s done, it’s over.

But reciprocity is different.

Reciprocity says,
“I give because we are in relationship.”
The return might come later.
From someone else.
In a way I can’t predict.

There’s no debt here.
No demand.
Only responsibility—to one another,
to the circle,
to those still coming.

I don’t help you so you’ll help me.
I help because someone once helped me—
and now it’s my turn
to carry it forward.

Ekosi.
