🦶 Bones of the Foot – The Unsung Heroes of Movement

🦴 1. Tarsal Bones (7) – Hindfoot & Midfoot

These bones give shape and stability to the ankle and heel.
1. Talus – Sits on top of the calcaneus; connects the foot to the tibia and fibula (ankle joint).
2. Calcaneus – The heel bone; largest bone of the foot and helps absorb body weight.
3. Navicular – Boat-shaped bone in front of the talus; helps maintain the arch.
4. Cuboid – Cube-shaped bone on the outer (lateral) side; supports body weight during walking.
5. Medial Cuneiform – First cuneiform; connects to the big toe metatarsal.
6. Intermediate Cuneiform – Second cuneiform; between medial and lateral.
7. Lateral Cuneiform – Third cuneiform; next to the cuboid.

🦴 2. Metatarsal Bones (5) – Middle of the foot
• Long bones numbered I–V (big toe to little toe).
• Act as a bridge between tarsals and toes.
• Help support the foot arch and distribute weight evenly.

👉 Examples:
• 1st Metatarsal – thickest, connects to big toe.
• 5th Metatarsal – connects to little toe, commonly injured in ankle twists.

🦴 3. Phalanges (14) – Toes
• Each toe has 3 phalanges: proximal, middle, distal.
• The big toe (hallux) has only 2: proximal and distal.
• These bones give the toes flexibility, help in gripping surfaces, and pushing the body forward during walking.

✅ Summary:
• Tarsals = 7 bones (ankle/heel support)
• Metatarsals = 5 bones (midfoot bridge)
• Phalanges = 14 bones (toes & movement)

👉 Total = 26 bones per foot

🫀⚡️Pre-eclampsia ⚡️🫀

A complication of antepartum, pre-eclampsia is taken seriously to prevent eclampsia, which is the development of convulsions or even coma in a preeclamptic woman

🫀 Some preventative measures:

- Low doses of aspirin to start before 16 weeks
- Calcium supplementation in low-calcium intake population

🫀 How to manage or monitor:

⏲️ 60 seconds drug review: Common Side Effects 💊

💊 All drugs are associated with adverse effects. Some of these adverse effects are common and expected, some are serious and require discontinuation, while others are due to interactions with substances such as alcohol.

🧠 Familiarity with potential side effects is essential for patient education and to help minimize patient concerns.

📝 Often, patients show up with complaints related to a new medication. Check out today's quiz to see if you can think of some medications that are associated with a common side effect.

🌟 Tips for counseling on these side effects:

👉🏻 Constipation: ensure the patient is on a bowel regimen when starting these medications (ex: docusate, senna)

👉🏻 Dry cough: switch to an alternative class (ARBs have a less incidence of dry cough)

👉🏻 Orangish discoloration of urine: educate patients that this effect is harmless and will go away after they stop taking the drug

👉🏻 Disulfiram-like reaction when taken with alcohol: avoid alcohol while taking this medication and for 3 days after the last dose. This includes alcohol in mouthwash or cough or cold syrups.

👉🏻 Severe diarrhea: ensure patient is on an anti-diarrheal medication such as loperamide while taking this drug

👉🏻 Myopathies and rhabdomyolysis: if severe, discontinuation of the drug and switch to an alternative medication

👉🏻 Dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention: often these side effects are wanted to treat a symptom (ex: urinary incontinence). If so, monitor for other anticholinergic side effects and if the patient is not tolerating then switch to an alternative medication.
