Valentine’s Day may be over, but strong relationships are built in the small moments. The Gottman Method The Gottman Institute reminds us that expressing admiration, appreciation, and affection in everyday ways creates lasting connections. It is not grand gestures that sustain a partnership, but consistent acts of kindness, warmth, and intentional care. Small actions that occur often and over time can strengthen, repair, and deepen satisfaction.

If you are looking for support in building a more connected and resilient relationship, reach out to info@concentriccounseling.com to learn more about our Gottman-trained couples therapists or explore our couples intensives.

At Concentric, we celebrate Black History Month by honoring the legacy of healing, resilience, and innovation led by the Black community, while continuing to name and challenge the systemic barriers that limit access to mental health care. We recognize over 100 years of advocacy that has shaped policy, expanded health care, and protected the rights of all people. Therapy must be a space where culture is centered, experiences are believed, and Black mental health is supported every day.

Over the weekend, we bid farewell and had one last hurrah at Alarmist Brewing & Taproom. It’s tough to see a local business close its doors. Wishing nothing but the best for the owner and people who worked there.

When the world feels heavy and helplessness starts to settle in, taking action can offer a way forward. Community care is one of the most powerful ways we create safety and support for one another.

In late December, Jennifer Karolak Larson, the Founder of Concentric attended a fundraising event to support three wonderful organizations. This event was hosted by Two Fields Over and Van Lawless with food provided by La Principal. The gathering was deeply inspiring, and as a result, Concentric also chose to make additional donations to the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and Connections for the Homeless.

We believe in stepping toward care, especially when pain feels overwhelming. Concentric Counseling & Consulting is here to hold space for your grief, your fear, and your hope.

We expect grief to arrive only with death. But it can show up in moments that didn't happen. As Dr. Edith Eger says, "All therapy is grief work." Therapy makes room for what didn’t happen and helps us learn how to live with what is. Concentric's own Christian Younginer, LCPC, NCC, beautifully writes about his personal experience with therapy and losses that shape all of us. Sometimes anxiety, grief, or overwhelm can pull us out of our bodies and make it hard to access our thoughts or emotions. Somatic grounding practices help gently bring us back to the present moment by reconnecting with physical sensations.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, disconnected, or on edge, you’re not alone. These simple practices can be a starting point. And if you’d like support going deeper, understanding what’s beneath the anxiety or grief, and learning how to process it, our therapists are here to help.

Many of us feel pressure to start the new year “right.” This is your gentle reminder that New Year’s resolutions do not need a price tag or drastic change attached to them. Sometimes, it is the small, intentional steps that make the biggest difference. Investing in your mental health is always priceless. If you missed our Founder's blog, we wanted to share again as a reminder that meaningful change does not have to be drastic; sometimes it begins with small steps like leaning into honesty, reflection, and sharing our stories.

A few days ago, we referenced Lori Gottlieb's, MFT, work from her interview on about how to approach New Year's resolutions. Concentric Founder, Jennifer Larson's, LCPC, NCC blog, “A Therapist’s New Year’s Resolution: Therapist Self-Disclosure and Mental Health Advocacy,” we are invited to consider how talking openly about mental health can create a ripple effect in reducing shame, increasing connection, and making help more accessible. This blog post also reminds us that growth does not require an all-at-once leap. It is often a gradual leaning in while taking baby steps and navigating the tension between safety and vulnerability while using our voices for ourselves and in service of others. https://www.concentricchicago.com/blog/2017/12/28/a-therapists-new-years-resolution

In a recent conversation on Mel Robbins’ podcast, psychotherapist Lori Gottlieb shared why New Year’s resolutions so often fall apart. It’s not due to a lack of motivation, but rather it can stem from a lack of taking baby steps and overlooking the losses that come with change, she shares, "Change and loss travel together." To learn more, you can listen to episode 345 (https://www.melrobbins.com/episode/episode-345/).

In the next few days, we will be posting another piece on New Year's resolutions, a blog post written by Concentric's Founder, Jennifer Larson, LCPC. NCC. Stay tuned for that one!
