Black History Month isn’t just history — it’s action. ✊🏾
As we honor the legacy of Black leaders who fought for justice, like Martin Luther King Jr., we recommit to nonviolence and community care— because every life deserves dignity, safety, and opportunity. Justice and peace are inseparable. Together, we can build safer, stronger neighborhoods guided by peace, courage, and justice.

Recently some of our staff had the opportunity to visit the Cara Chicago offices, our Workforce Development partners in Austin. They got to join in their Morning Motivations and experience some of what program participants get to experience.

And they got to see participant, Jacob, announce his recent employment at the Greater Chicago Food Depository! What an uplifting and encouraging start to the week!
Congrats to Jacob and thank you to his Institute for Nonviolence Chicago outreach worker, Michael Harris for guiding him on his transformation and employment journey and to Cara Chicago for partnering with to create sustainable career opportunities for our participants.

Our MLK 2026 event was a shared moment of reflection, learning, and commitment to peace and nonviolence. Thanks to everyone who showed up and had the COURAGE TO PARTICIPATE.

We're still thinking about what we all experienced.

• Soledad Adrianzén McGrath’s Beloved Community Builder Award acceptance speech reminded us that courage also lives in the willingness to engage deeply in the well-being of family and others even when facing political and social harm.
• The Choose Peace film offered a window into the real lives, relationships, and impact behind community violence intervention—showing how peace is practiced every day through courageous people.
• And the panel conversation, featuring Trymaine Lee & Mr. Ernest Crim III, rose to a master-class level of dialogue — connecting history, storytelling, journalism, research, and frontline practice in a way that challenged and inspired all of us.

Together, these moments affirmed what Dr. King taught us: nonviolence is not passive — it is an intentional way of life for courageous people.

At the 37th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast on Monday, January 19, Teny Gross, CEO of Institute for Nonviolence Chicago was awarded the “2026 Trailblazing and Excellence in Nonviolence Award.” Dr. King’s concept of the challenges us to reject hate, greed, and division – and instead, to create a world where everyone is valued and no one is left behind. That is the work we are called to do - to not only remember the concept of the Beloved Community but to answer Dr.King’s demand for action.

For over 30 years, Teny has embodied this work and mission.

As a proud street outreach worker in Boston, Executive Director of the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence in Providence, RI, and founding Institute for Nonviolence Chicago ten years ago, and helping establish Communities Partnering 4 Peace - CP4P, Teny has helped shape the current CVI ecosystem.

Teny is also an innovator and educator spreading his mission for peace far beyond the city. He has presented at numerous colleges and universities, as well as the National Institute of Justice, Department of Justice, The White House, as well as abroad on the topics of violence reduction, managing outreach teams, professional work with the justice system, and nonviolence.

Teny’s firm commitment to Dr. King’s nonviolence philosophy and building organizations that teach his principles and practices locally, nationally, and internationally, makes him worthy of such an honor presented by Rainbow PUSH Coalition .

We are grateful for Teny’s leadership, hard work, and dedication to nonviolence and building the Beloved Community everywhere he goes.

Today, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we're reminded of a truth at the center of his philosophy: “Nonviolence is for courageous people.” Nonviolence is an active, hopeful way of life. It challenges us to respond to disagreement without anger, to replace hatred with understanding, and to build community even when it feels difficult. Courage is refusing to be a bystander.

At Institute for Nonviolence Chicago, we are making Dr. King’s vision real today. Young and young at heart people are responding to our programs and services and choosing peace. They are working diligently and with purpose to transform their lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.

We see courage in action every day—from participants to outreach workers, victim support to workforce development, donors to those who stand up for peace and justice.

As we mark 10 years of service, we’re looking ahead with even more optimism. Our next decade will continue to be shaped by the power of courage and community to change lives. Chicago is a city of Big Shoulders, and we make sure it’s also a city of Big Dreams. And we want everyone to know how they can be part of this mission — through support, learning, partnership, or everyday acts that make their neighborhoods safer and more connected.

Thank you for having the courage to participate. With your continued engagement, our next 10 years will be more hopeful and transformative.
