The ramblings of a veteran caregiver are simple yet so complex.
Some of us start our careers in this field, while others search for years to find something as rewarding. My story started in the construction field, yet after so many years of feeling like it was not enough and after a one‑time shoulder injury, I began searching for a job that my body could handle but would still give me the fulfillment of giving back to the world somehow.

That is when I found Armistead and my amazing boss Grace. We clicked on the spot, and I could tell this was going to be the beginning of something that would change my life forever.

Each day starts with the optimism that any mountain can be climbed and that with enough determination a long‑term difference can be made. I check my resident book while having coffee to see if anyone has a birthday or anything medical related coming up. This lets me know how to approach my day as well as them, because not every birthday or medical visit is something they look forward to, per se.

Before leaving, I pick out a scrub top for the day. Some veterans like simple designs, while others enjoy the laugh of a comical theme or pattern. Each of my veterans is quite unique in that way. With a plan in my head and a heart full of encouragement, I head out to conquer my workday.

Some mornings they may be awake, and others still deep in sleep, because fighting demons you never asked for is not the easiest battle to defeat. I let them sleep on the mornings when it is clear they stayed up too late. Chaos is spread about and messes need to be cleaned. I put their home back together and erase the battles of the day before. I know they cannot do it, and that is my job, to make life easier of course.

Then the hour hits when they awake and say good morning. Sometimes they are full of grace and smiles, and other days there are tears and a look of being lost and confused all over again. It is in those moments that being kind hearted and putting myself in their shoes can make or break a veteran’s day. I have found that a lighthearted smile and a “Good morning doll” can make the saddest face brighten and remind them they are not a burden, not even a little, not even at all.

Armed with optimism and a fresh cup of coffee, we begin our day. Sometimes we listen to stories from long ago, and other times there are quiet moments when simply being there is what they need most. Sometimes they need to feel heard, or maybe just have someone say, “I understand and I am always here.”

Our job may seem simple and in some ways too easy, but if you ask us whether the day ends when we clock out, the answer will always remain the same. Our thoughts and prayers stay with them, and we bring home the grief or the happiness in our hearts and minds. I often sit in silence and reflect on my day’s interactions to find a way to do it better, or maybe it should just be left the same.

I love the difference I can make and seeing life come back to those who had to endure so much at such a young age. Many think of them as just another veteran, but each one has a unique story to tell. I am proud of the work I do and the lifelong friendships I have made. Most of my free time is spent reflecting on the difference they make in my life, which leads me to more volunteering and seeking out better ways to serve.

If even for a moment, or maybe just for a day, we can make a veteran feel that they matter in every single way.

This Black History Month, we proudly recognize and celebrate the incredible contributions of Black professionals in healthcare, especially the dedicated caregivers, Home Health Aides (HHAs), and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) who serve our communities every day.

National data shows that nearly one-third of home health aides and nursing assistants in the U.S. are Black, highlighting the vital role Black caregivers play in supporting individuals and families with compassion, skill, and commitment.

We are grateful for the diversity, strength, and heart of our team.

Jannette Vega truly went above and beyond for her client’s 106th birthday! She thoughtfully planned a Betty Boop–themed celebration (her client’s favorite), complete with a themed cake, matching decorations, and goody bags. She even invited family and friends to join in, creating a day filled with smiles, love, and unforgettable memories.

Jannette is a beautiful, selfless soul, and we are so grateful to have her on our team. Thank you, Jannette, for all that you do every day, and especially for making this milestone birthday so special.
