Health Update #15 🩺
Discipline

Scary word, discipline 😳 It sounds so severe, so negative. And for a young parent with a beautiful innocent baby and then toddler, how can discipline even be considered? 🤔 The definition of discipline is “teaching a person to obey a set of rules or a code of behavior”.

Well that sounds a little better, particularly a “code of behavior”. What codes of behavior do we want to teach our children? Is it important to learn to get along with others? Do we want them not only to love us but also to respect us? Do we want to teach them self-control?
In the next several health updates I plan to divide up my recommendations for teaching children codes of behavior by age ranges as developmentally the strategies vary significantly between the groups. But for now let’s look into what discipline is not.

It is not punishing your children because you’re ticked off. It is not yelling at them.
It is not demeaning them.
It is not getting even with them.
Discipline comes from the root word “disciple”, and I think if we as parents approached discipline more in the spirit of discipling we might have a clearer view of what we’re trying to accomplish- raising well adjusted, happy, loving, useful in society adults who respect their parents and others. But children are incapable of discipling themselves. They need teachers- you! If you look on the internet and do a search of the results of not disciplining/discipling your children, you will find that the results show they are unhappy, angry and even resentful. In some ways you are telling your children “I don’t have the time or desire to “disciple” you so figure it out on your own”. Can you imagine what the world would be like if professionally/ scholastically if it worked that way? So you want to build bridges? Well good luck, have at it? You want to be a doctor? Well, read some books and then start experimenting on people! But yet that is what many people are doing with their children and all of us have seen children that have very little self control. I feel sorry for those kids because in a way, they are crying out for help by just being louder and more obnoxious because they want their parents to pay attention to them, they want to know there is a safety net when their losing control.
So join me as we explore this challenging but yet so important topic in the coming weeks.
Blessings!
Dr. Logan

There has been a recall of certain Similac, Alimentum and Elecare powdered formulas.
Forbes.com has a good article on it and tells you exactly how to check if your formula is one of the recall ones. The formula was found to be contaminated with bacteria and 4 babies were hospitalized recently due to the contamination.

Health Update # 14: Covid-Again?! 🦠 😷

Welcome to 2022 and yes, we continue in the Covid fog. First, the original Covid strain, then Delta last summer/fall and now Omicron.

By now, many of you have probably had Covid at least once and particularly this last strain-Omicron. Fortunately, even though it has been much more contagious, the symptoms for most have been more mild. Many of you have reported to me that you had mild to moderate “cold” symptoms and that your children even had milder symptoms in most circumstances.

What do the current symptoms look like? 🤔
They include sore throat, headache, cough, runny nose, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea, tiredness and fever. Most people have several of the symptoms to varying degrees of severity.

What can you do when you get sick?

Many of the illnesses are short lived so you may only have to quarantine for 5 days if your asymptomatic by day 5 and there is no recommendation to retest at the end of 5 days. I recommend when you get sick to get plenty of rest, drink lots of water, take vitamin D (which I recommend you take everyday anyways-see previous health update on vitamin D recommendations) and eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies. Hot/cold alternating showers can also invigorate the immune system.

What about vaccines? 💉
We get a lot of questions from you as parents as to whether or not to vaccinate your children against Covid-particularly the 5-11 year old group. It is pretty well established that vaccines are effective against Covid versus not vaccinating. I watch the hospitalization rates at Enloe bi-weekly, and the number of people hospitalized who have not been vaccinated against Covid are between 70-90% of those hospitalized for Covid. So obviously, getting vaccinated doesn’t guarantee you won’t get Covid or even hospitalized, but it significantly improves your odds of not. For children, the risk of serious illness or hospitalization is pretty low, so why get vaccinated and is it safe?

Safety: the main concern has been the development of myocarditis or inflammation of the heart. 🫀

Through Dec 9, there have been over 7.1 million doses of Covid vaccine given to children ages 5-11 and only 8 cases of myocarditis have occurred. That’s about 1 in a million chance of your children getting myocarditis from the vaccine. The risk of developing myocarditis from getting Covid is 1000 times higher. Also, getting your child vaccinated against Covid will help decrease transmission of Covid in the community and it certainly helps with travel restrictions and attendance to certain functions. However, we continue to respect the right of parents to choose for their children what they feel is best for them. We just strive to be a place that you trust as a reliable source of information!

God bless you and your precious kids this year!

Health Update #13 🩺

Sunshine (Vitamin D) ☀️

Who doesn’t love sunshine? On a beautiful fall or spring morning, to feel the warmth on your face, to brighten the world with it’s glorious light especially after days of fog or clouds. 🤗 All life depends on the sun. The benefits to humans include improving sleep, reducing stress, bone density and strength, strengthening our immune systems, even helping with depression. Seems like it’s pretty important!
But here’s the problem. Most people don’t get enough sun exposure year round and especially if you live in the northern latitude regions of the world (we do). Even in the summer, most of us including our children do not get enough sun exposure because we use sunscreen which blocks 95% of UV radiation (which is what we want so we don’t develop skin cancer).

So here’s the catch. UVB radiation is needed to produce vit D in our skin which produces most of the health benefits of sun exposure.
Multiple studies have shown most people including children to be vitamin D deficient in this country and most countries in the world. And because vit D is so important to the body, there are many disorders that have developed in adults and children, such as,
Poor immune systems
Obesity
Early diabetes
Sleep problems
Poor bone health
Depression
Autoimmune diseases and many other conditions.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that experts say is actually more of a hormone in its activity. It is involved in hundreds of body processes including bone growth, immune development and response, melatonin production, digestion and more. So since it’s so important and most of us are very deficient in vit D, what should we do?
We need to take vitamin D3 supplements daily, at least in the non-summer months and here is what many experts recommend:
Infants: 400 IU (international units) daily. If breastfeeding, either give orally in the form of vit D drops or even better, mom’s should take 5000 IU daily and their milk will have good vit D levels.
Children ages 1-8: take 1000 IU daily Children/adolescents: take 2000 IU daily.
If your child is overweight, depressed, gets bone fractures, gets sick frequently, we can order a blood test to determine the level of vit D in their body and supplement vit D3 much more specifically.
Parting note: studies have shown that good levels of vit D can help you decrease your chance of contracting influenza and even colds. And PubMed.gov has an article that suggests that 9 of 10 people who died of COVID may have lived if they had had healthy levels of vitamin D in their body!

God bless and may the sun/son fill you with warmth and gladness.

Health Update #12 Thanksgiving 🦃

The practice of giving thanks and particularly the 4th Thursday of November every year in the U.S.

Why give thanks? And to who and for what? Does it affect my health? 🤔

The motive behind thankfulness is gratitude-grace, graciousness or gratefulness. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives. Multiple studies by psychologists have found that those who practice gratitude/thankfulness are happier, exercise more and have to see the doctor less. Sounds great doesn’t it!
So what am I thankful for?
I’m thankful for my loyal and hardworking staff.
Sara-who came to us from Dr. Wassermann’s after he retired. Her boundless energy, her spark and her love for our patients.
Ashley-who’s quiet and calm demeanor yet passion for caring for our patients is so evident.
Leah-who keeps us functioning so well on the patient care side of things and “mothers” our patients with true love.
Cambria-who cheerfully greets our patients on the phone and at reception and is always ready to help out in any way she can.
Annie-the “glue” that holds our practice together! Her leadership and passion elevate all of us to a higher level and that translates to you our patients as well!
I’m also thankful for my colleagues in the practice.
Dr. Pham- her cheerfulness, her deep devotion to our patients, the spark she gives to our practice. We can’t wait until she’s back in February!
Stacey Riley- our nurse practitioner who has been a delight to work with. Her hard work, determination to do the very best for her patients and cheerfulness are a blessing.
Dr. Mallory-we’re so thankful that she’s back and survived a long hard year of breast cancer treatment. She once again is providing the caring, loving treatment of her patients that she has given for so many years.
I’m thankful for the love of my life, my wife Lyndia. And so thankful for my adult children and their spouses. And for wonderful friends and a community I love to be a part of.
And I’m thankful to you parents and patients who put your trust in me, my colleagues and our office.
And most of all, to Jesus who is the Light of the World and from whom all blessings flow.

Blessings,
Dr. Logan
