SO WHAT'S INVOLVED IN IRLEN TESTING?
STEP 1. Irlen Screening appointment which is a one hour appointment and includes a set of diagnostic measuring tools based around black print and white paper which determines symptoms as well as severity of the symptoms.
This testing also involves the trial of a number of different coloured overlay film which reduces which wavelengths of light are reflected off the page and into the eyes. Improvements in reading, comfort and also for school aged children handwriting are measured when using the overlay compared with white paper.
STEP 2. A further appointment is then booked to determine the precise tint for some spectral filters which will be worn as glasses. This colour is often different to the overlay colour as they filter by refracted light rather than reflected light. This is a 2 hour appointment involving reading, as well as observation of body language and reporting by the client of how the lenses are helping.
The client does not look into a machine to determine the colour, they hold the lenses to their eyes exactly as if they were in glasses. This method gives the most accurate outcome, in determining the best tint.

I HAVE JUST TESTED POSITIVE TO IRLEN.
HOW DO I GET THE GLASSES?
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT COLOUR IS BEST FOR ME?
Once you or your child have been screened for Irlen the recommendation is a further assessment to be fitted for the Irlen Filters that are worn as glasses.
Choosing the correct tint involves a 2 hour assessment where you look through the lenses to determine the tints that provide the best comfort and clarity.
NO ONE JUST COMES IN AND RANDOMLY PICKS A COLOUR!
For older children and adults who can read there is a lot of reading involved in order to ensure the correct depth of colour or even combination of colours.
For younger children and non-readers it is about concentration, focus, fidgeting and recognising letters and words.
