Happy 25th Anniversary to Kevin Woodard!
Just before his shift at Scioto Paint Valley Mental Health Center’s Crisis Center ended on Thursday morning, Kevin Woodard was greeted with a surprise.
Executive Director William Mahaffey, along with the Crisis Center staff, brought in a celebration breakfast in honor of Kevin’s 25th anniversary with the organization.
“It snuck up on me,” Kevin said, seated in the Crisis Center where he started working on October 23, 2000. “It feels like it can’t be that long, but then it also feels like I’ve been doing it forever – in a good way. Overall, it’s been a good experience.”
For all but a few months of his time at SPVMHC, Kevin has worked the overnight shift – coming in late at night and leaving when everyone else is arriving for work.
“There was a period where I worked days – a couple of months maybe. But I fell in love with the night shift. If I’ve been here 25 years, I’d say 24 and a-half of it have been at night,” he said. “I like being by myself and setting my own schedule. It grew on me.”
He said that the biggest change he’s seen during his time answering crisis calls is the increase in paid staff that, today, answers the phones 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
“Back then we had four, five, six staff, and everybody else was a volunteer,” he said.
Kevin said that his interactions with callers have been what he’s enjoyed the most in his career.
“I’ve talked to a lot of people over the years. Some of them to this day I still have contact with,” he said. “It’s been a good experience. For people who have a heart for others, it’s a great place to work.”
