‼️ Why Breathing Is So Important After Surgery:
Many surgeons recommend hyperbaric oxygen to support healing, but natural oxygenation is just as essential. After anesthesia, small areas of the lungs can temporarily collapse (atelectasis), especially after tummy tuck surgery when patients tend to hold their breath. After a tummy tuck, it is important not to hold in a cough! Instead, support your abdomen by holding your tummy tuck pillow or binder firmly, press in, and cough. This simple step helps fully open your lungs, including the deeper airways, which reduces the risk of lung complications like atelectasis (the collapse of a lung or part of a lung) and supports proper oxygenation and healing.

While treatments like hyperbaric oxygen are sometimes recommended to help with healing, consistent deep breathing and coughing are often even more important for healthy patients. Practicing this with patients builds confidence and reminds them that keeping the lungs open is a key part of a smooth recovery once surgery is over.
