Kudos to Samantha Hinrichs, RN, who was recently presented with a DAISY Award at Marshfield Medical Center-Eau Claire. Samantha works in the operating room, and a patient of hers wrote the following nomination:

"I am writing to enthusiastically nominate Samantha Hinrichs for the DAISY award.

Samantha is, without a doubt, the most thoughtful, caring, and empathetic nurse I have encountered. Her dedication to her patient's comfort and well-being deserves to be recognized. I recently underwent a major surgery, which was also the first surgery of my life. As you can imagine my nerves were incredibly high. From the moment Samantha was assigned to me, she made it her mission to make sure I felt safe, informed, and calm. Samantha is an outstanding example of the profound impact a nurse can have on a patient's experience. She turned my experience into one where I felt supported and genuinely cared for. Thank you for recognizing the difference she makes."

Marshfield Medical Center-Eau Claire regularly recognizes nursing staff with a Trauma Nurse of the Month award. This month's recipient is Jess Hruza. Her nomination reads:

"We want to take a moment to congratulate Jess on her exceptional patient care during a level II Pediatric trauma activation at MMC-Eau Claire, involving a 9-year-old patient who fell more than 8 feet onto cement. Her patient care and documentation were outstanding and truly exceeded expectations both at our facility and on a state level. Since joining MMC-Eau Claire in 2022, Jess has consistently demonstrated high standards in patient care, and we are grateful for her commitment and compassionate patient care.

This patient received timely critical care where imaging and ED length of stay were well below the goal for trauma patients. 😊

Jess and the ED team that day managed a complex patient with a high Injury Severity Score (ISS) of 22, involving multiple significant injuries. This patient was transferred to a Level II TCF at MMC-Marshfield in 2hr and 22 min (goal is < 3 hours).

Thank you, Jess, for your exceptional patient care and dedication!"

Congratulations to Ashley Dezort, RN, on your Daisy Award!

The family who nominated Ashley wanted to commend her for saving their newborn daughter's life back in 2020. Ashley's advocacy led to the discovery of a mass near baby Ramsey's liver and subsequent diagnosis of a rare pediatric liver cancer.

The patients write, "Ramsey started chemotherapy treatment at 12 days old. As you can imagine, there were many bumps in the road, but Ramsey was declared cancer-free on November 11, 2020. With a two-year-old at home and a newborn with cancer, we were in survivor mode. We weren't able to thank Ashley for saving our daughter. As fate would have it, Ashley was the nurse who admitted us to the labor and delivery unit two years later, in 2022, as we were preparing to welcome our third child. We were about halfway through our elevator ride when we realized who each other was. A few tears were shed, and hugs were exchanged. But it's still not enough. How do you ever repay the person who literally saved your child's life? As we approach Ramsey's five-year anniversary of being cancer-free, we continue to think about Ashley often. We wanted to thank her one more time. We will never have the words to fully express how we feel or how much we appreciate the role she has played in our lives. So we will simply say . . . thank you."

Marty LaRue from Chippewa Falls had severe back issues, mobility challenges and chronic pain. He was referred to the Marshfield Medical Center - Eau Claire orthopedic spine care team and met with Nikhil Shelke, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon.

Dr. Shelke recommended a less invasive approach that uses a spinal endoscope, an array of surgical tools and HD camera. This minimally invasive spinal surgery is the first of its kind in the Eau Claire area. Dr. Shelke’s technique creates a smaller incision and helps patients return to normal activities faster with less pain.

“I went into surgery with a pain level of 10 and woke up with zero pain,” Marty said. “I was stiff and could tell I had surgery, but I could move and stretch. It was incredible.”
