Two years ago, something extraordinary happened.

Just six weeks after HSHS announced it was closing Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s and walking away from more than 70,000 patients in our region, the community came together and formed the Chippewa Valley Health Cooperative.

In just the past year alone, together we have:
- Closed on the purchase of the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls — a major milestone in restoring local hospital capacity
- Secured an agreement for land in Lake Hallie for the new hospital
- Opened our local Cancer Care services to begin restoring critical oncology access in our region
- Prepared to launch our Advanced Wound Care Center, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, to meet another urgent community need
- Continued the complex, behind-the-scenes licensing, certification, staffing, and operational work required to reopen Chippewa Falls as a full-service hospital later this year

We were officially formed on February 29, 2024, as a community-owned, nonprofit cooperative, governed locally, accountable to you, and built to restore the 34%+ of healthcare access our region lost .

We still have important work in front of us: reopening Chippewa Falls as a fully operational hospital, continuing to expand services, and building our new, state-of-the-art hospital in Lake Hallie.

But right now, we're celebrating two years of Chippewa Valley Health Cooperative! 🎉

Chorale Nouveau wonderful elite choir has chosen the Cooperative as its non profit partner for their concerts on January 17th and May 2nd! Chippewa Valley Health Cooperative is proud to recognize our incredible construction partner, Market & Johnson, whose expertise and commitment have been instrumental in bringing the new Cooperative Hospital in Chippewa Falls to life.

Over the past six months, M&J has worked side-by-side with the CVHC team to transform the facility and prepare it for the expanded healthcare services coming to the Chippewa Valley. Their work has included:

💉 New infusion suites – designed with comfort, privacy, and patient-centered care in mind

The Edward & Hannah M. Rutledge Charities (Rutledge Charities) and William J. & Gertrude R. Casper Foundation (Casper Foundation) have awarded a combined gift of $750,000 to the Chippewa Valley Health Cooperative to support the reopening of the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls as a full-service hospital (now named Chippewa Valley Cooperative Hospital).

The Chippewa Valley Cooperative Hospital opened its Cancer Center in November 2025 and will be adding additional critically needed healthcare services early next year. The hospital expects to reopen as a full-service hospital — emergency, intensive care unit, labor & delivery, surgical, and medical hospital bed services, among others — by summer 2026.

“Rutledge Charities and the Casper Foundation want to help take care of the needs of our present population and allow Chippewa County residents access to affordable local health care. My many years in Chippewa Falls have shown me how a local hospital can improve a community through more than medical needs and allow a community to grow,” said Jerry Jacobson, Trustee for Rutledge Charities and Casper Foundation.

“We are so grateful for this generous commitment from Rutledge Charities and the Casper Foundation,” said Andrea Blaeser, Development Director for the Chippewa Valley Health Cooperative. “Their gift will have a positive and long-lasting impact on our community for generations to come.”

Last Wednesday, Chippewa Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Cancer Center in the Chippewa Valley Cooperative Hospital!

More than 100 community members, partners, and supporters joined us as we showcased the new space, discussed the impact our Cancer Center will have on local families, and celebrated this important milestone for healthcare in the Chippewa Valley.

The Chippewa Valley Health Cooperative will be providing the morgue facilities in its Chippewa Falls Cooperative Hospital facility to Chippewa County, restoring a critical public service that was lost when Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) closed St. Joseph’s Hospital in 2024.

Under the agreement, the morgue in the basement of the reopened Chippewa Falls Cooperative Hospital will serve as the official county morgue and will be maintained by the Cooperative as part of its mission to serve the community.

The morgue will be operated in cooperation with the Chippewa County Coroner’s Office and is equipped to receive, hold, and release the deceased for autopsies, investigations, and funeral arrangements as needed. The Cooperative is providing morgue services to the county at no cost.
