Glaucoma is painless, gradual and people often find it difficult to notice. This is because the brain automatically “fills in” gaps in the visual picture which are caused by Glaucoma. This can prevent people seeing objects or obstacles.

Only about half of the people who have Glaucoma are even aware that they have the condition. When Glaucoma develops, usually you do not have any early symptoms and the disease progresses slowly. In this way Glaucoma can steal your sight very gradually. Glaucoma can cause blindness if it is left untreated.

Glaucoma is referred to as the silent thief because it slowly steals your sight before you realize anything is wrong, starting with your peripheral vision. It’s a leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the U.S.

Glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve, which is accompanied by high pressure inside your eye. Blind spots being to form in your visual field when the optic nerve is damaged. If left untreated, glaucoma may lead to blindness in both eyes.
Advances in medicine have made it much easier to diagnose and treat glaucoma.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the United States. But as many as half of people with glaucoma don’t know they have it.

Glaucoma has no early symptoms. The only way to check for it is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam. There’s no cure for glaucoma, but starting treatment as early as possible can help stop vision loss.

Anyone can get glaucoma, but some people are at higher risk, including people who:

Are over age 60
Are Black/African American and over age 40
Are Asian American
Are Hispanic/Latino
Have a family history of glaucoma

We encourage everyone at higher risk for glaucoma to get a dilated eye exam. It’s the best way to protect their vision!
