🤕 Is your headache actually coming from your neck?

Not all headaches are migraines.

If your pain:
• Starts in your neck
• Spreads up the back of your head
• Sits behind one eye
• Gets worse after long hours at a computer
• Increases with neck movement

…it could be a cervicogenic headache.

Your upper neck shares nerve pathways with your head. When joints or muscles become stiff or irritated (hello posture + screen time 👩‍💻), they can refer pain upward.

The key?
If the source is mechanical, medication may only mask it.

Physical therapy focuses on correcting the root cause - restoring mobility, improving posture, and reducing muscle tension for longer-lasting relief.

If you’ve been treating the headache but not the neck, it might be time to look deeper. Request your appointment today! https://totalmotionpt.net/request-physical-therapy-appointment/?utm_source=pes_custom&utm_medium=social

🔥 Exercise of the Month with Dr. Kumar: Hip Dips

If you’re dealing with hip tightness, knee discomfort, or lower back stiffness, this one’s for you.

Hip dips are a simple but powerful movement that helps strengthen your lateral hip muscles — especially your glutes — which play a major role in pelvic stability, balance, and overall movement control. When these muscles are weak, other areas (like your knees or low back) often pick up the slack.

This exercise helps build:
✔️ Hip stability
✔️ Better balance
✔️ Stronger support for walking, running, and daily activities

🎥 Watch Dr. Kumar demonstrate proper form — small adjustments make a big difference.

💬 Try it out and let us know how it feels! And as always, if you’re unsure whether this movement is right for you, ask your PT.

Cardio isn’t just for marathon runners. ❤️

It’s for the mom walking the neighborhood after dinner.
It’s for the dad trying to keep up with his kids.
It’s for anyone who wants to feel better moving through everyday life.

Even moderate cardio like brisk walking, cycling, or light incline treadmill work can:
💓 Strengthen your heart
🩸 Improve circulation
🦵 Support joint health and mobility
🛡️ Reduce your risk of chronic disease

You don’t need extreme workouts. You need consistency.

When paired with strength and mobility work, cardio helps your body move more efficiently and recover better! Which means fewer aches and more confidence in your day-to-day life.

💬 What’s your go-to way to get your heart rate up? Walking? Biking? Let us know below!

Say hello to Dr. Christian Kumar, PT, DPT! 👋

Originally from Lynchburg, VA, Dr. Kumar earned his degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Lynchburg before completing his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Belmont University in Nashville.

As a former collegiate tennis player 🎾, he understands firsthand what it takes to compete, recover, and stay in the game. He loves working with athletes of all levels but he’s just as passionate about helping patients from all walks of life regain strength, mobility, and confidence in the outpatient orthopedic setting.

When he’s not in the clinic, you’ll likely find him outdoors with his wife or back on the tennis or pickleball courts. He’s currently pursuing his board certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist - always pushing to sharpen his skills for his patients. 💪

Ankle pain creeping in during your runs? 🏃‍♂️👟 It’s usually not random.

Two of the biggest culprits we see:

➡️ Overuse without enough recovery
➡️ Sudden increases in mileage or intensity

When your training load jumps too quickly, your calves and Achilles tendon take on more stress than they’re ready for. Tight calves limit ankle mobility, which changes how your foot absorbs force and that extra strain has to go somewhere. Often, it shows up as ankle pain, stiffness, or lingering soreness after runs.

The fix isn’t always “run less.” It’s about:
✔️ Gradual mileage progression
✔️ Calf strength and mobility work
✔️ Addressing movement mechanics before pain becomes chronic

Runners in the New River Valley — especially with spring races around the corner — now is the time to train smart. 🏔️

💬 Dealing with ankle pain or tight calves? Don’t push through it. Let’s assess it early and keep you running strong.

“Sitting is the new smoking.” 👀

Bold statement… but Dr. Kumar breaks down exactly why prolonged sitting impacts your joints, muscles, and overall health - and what you can realistically do about it.

If you work at a desk, drive long hours, or find yourself sitting more this winter, this is a conversation you don’t want to skip.

🎥 Press play to hear his take - your back and hips will thank you.
