To help raise awareness for Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, rock your turquoise clothing and jewelry on Jan. 15!

Alaska Native and American Indian people who have a cervix should be screened according to national guidelines. This includes transgender, gender non-conforming, and two spirit people. Indigenous people are two times more likely to develop cervical cancer in their lifetime compared to others.

The HPV vaccine series helps prevent HPV infections, precancers, and cancers. The American Cancer Society and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend beginning the HPV vaccination series for boys and girls at age 11 or 12, but can be started as early as 9 years old and as late as 26 years old. The HPV vaccination is most effective before exposure to the virus occurs.

Protect future generations from HPV-related disease by scheduling the HPV vaccine today. Youth who receive the complete HPV vaccine series can reduce their risk of HPV-related cancers by 90%.

To find out if you are due for a cervical cancer screening or check your immunization status, send a message through MyHealth, https://bit.ly/scfmyhealth, or call your primary care team directly.
