Understanding Electrical Stimulation in Physical Therapy:

Electrical stimulation (or “e-stim”) is a commonly used tool in physical therapy that helps manage pain, reduce muscle spasms, and promote healing. It works by sending mild electrical impulses through the skin to stimulate nerves or muscles, which can block pain signals and improve circulation.

Benefits of E-Stim:
🔹Helps temporarily reduce pain by altering how your nerves send pain signals to the brain
🔹Can decrease muscle spasms and improve muscle activation after injury or surgery
🔹May enhance blood flow, supporting tissue healing

However, it’s important to know that e-stim is not a long-term fix! It’s a short-term tool for pain modulation and symptom relief. The true lasting benefits come from addressing the root cause through exercise, movement retraining, and manual therapy.

Not everyone is a candidate for e-stim. Patients with certain medical devices (like pacemakers), skin sensitivities, or specific health conditions may need to avoid it.

⚡️At Performance Plus Physical Therapy, we use electrical stimulation strategically as part of a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan designed to restore movement, build strength, and get you back to doing what you love pain-free.

When using a cane or assistive device, it should be held on the opposite side of your affected leg. ✅ This allows your stronger side to support your weaker side, promotes a more natural walking pattern, and reduces strain on your joints and muscles. The assistive device and affected leg are able to move together, giving you balance and stability with each step. 🦵🦯

Physical Therapist | PT, DPT

Dr. Santamaria is a Southern California native who joined PPPT in January 2019. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of California San Diego in 2014 where she discovered her passion for physical therapy. She continued to pursue a rehabilitation career and received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine in 2018. Throughout her career, Jennifer has gained experience working with orthopedic, neurological, pelvic floor/women's health, and pediatric patients. She developed further neurological therapy skills while completing a two-month internship in Italy and has completed various manual therapy courses for instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation and spine rehabilitation. As her career progressed, she developed a passion for pelvic health rehabilitation and completed advanced course work to address women's health and pelvic dysfunction. She believes manual therapy in congruence with exercise and neuro education are extremely important in achieving proper rehabilitation goals. Additionally, Jennifer is a fluent Spanish speaker and is able to effectively communicate with those who feel more comfortable completing their rehabilitation in their native tongue. When she’s not at her dream career Jennifer enjoys the outdoors, spending time with her frenchie pup, and traveling whenever possible.
