I grew up in a large family of 11 people. I didn’t even have a bedroom as a kid. I slept in the living room. Growing up, I read a lot of books written by Roald Dahl. I identified with a lot of his characters who felt like “misfits.” They went on all types of adventures, trying to find their place in the world. I wished for the day that I would be able to have my own adventure and write my own story.

My adventure was to become a Family Medicine physician who took care of all types of people, including the “misfits.” That journey brought me to Cincinnati, Ohio where there are a bunch of doctors like me.

My advice to everyone: the world is a big place. Dream about your next adventure, make a plan, and go!

You never know what you may find. I found a whole new life, not far from where I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. I’m currently writing a books of stories about some of my adventures ❤️

There are so many things that I wish that I could tell my 17-year-old self! Let’s go with 7 things:

1. 9/11 is going to change the world in a lot of ways. You are going to have to live with having an Arabic name. It will be hard at times. You will be ok though.

2. Your high school boyfriends will be a blip in time so don’t waste so much energy on their BS.

3. When you go to college, drink less alcohol. Those kids have been drinking since high school and you have NOT so don’t try to keep up with them. Drink some mocktails instead.

4. Start doing kickboxing at home again. That will help you manage your anxiety and eventually lead to you getting your driver’s license at age 23. You almost died at age 21 due to having a panic attack while practicing driving. You were not injured 🙌🏽 You totaled your car. You worked hard and bought another car.

5. Stop using progesterone birth control. It makes your anxiety worse. Especially when you are stressed or tired. Use combination birth control instead. You feel more like yourself.

6. Go to Ohio State. You hesitated about this decision because of number 2. It will be some of the best years of your life and you will meet many life-long friends. It will also prepare you for medical school. You will get accepted at age 21, graduate at age 26, and become the first physician in your family 🙌🏽

7. You will meet your husband at age 18, freshman year. That will be hard at times. You will be ok though. He will go to medical school too. The two of you will move to Cincinnati because they have a great group of Family Medicine physicians focused on public health and social justice. The two of you will work alongside them. You will also get student loan repayment and loan forgiveness 🙌🏽

The past year has been one of the hardest times of my life. I’ve had enough life experiences to know to lean on my community when the going gets tough.

What’s interesting about community is that it should be a give-and-take. If you plant enough seeds, you might be lucky enough to find your village and tribe to water you when you need it.

For example: I’m usually the person who buys concert tickets for my friends, because I have just been lucky enough to be that person. So imagine my surprise when my bestie invited me to join her Bruno Mars suite in Texas during my birthday weekend. I almost didn’t make it, but I made it 🥹

My tribe and my village are amazing. Thank you for being a part of it 🥰
