Getting a new mental health diagnosis can bring up a lotfear, relief, grief, validation, or all of the above.

A diagnosis is meant to guide treatment and help you better understand your experiences. But stigma and misunderstanding can make it hard to process.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed, remember:
• Your feelings are valid
• You don’t have to figure this out alone
• You are more than a label

In our latest blog, Robyn Williams, LPCC, shares practical ways to cope with a new diagnosis and move forward with clarity and support.

Today is Dissociative Disorders Awareness Day 💜

Dissociation is the mind’s natural defense mechanism when something feels overwhelming or unsafe. It can look like zoning out, feeling disconnected from your body, emotional numbness, or like the world around you isn’t real. For many people, it’s an automatic survival response not a choice.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) can help by teaching grounding skills, mindfulness, and distress tolerance tools that bring you back into the present safely and gently.

You are not “crazy.” Your nervous system learned to protect you. And new skills can help you feel more in control.

Anxiety can be one of the biggest obstacles when it comes to important moments in our lives. This is where the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique can be of use. This technique is designed to bring your awareness back to the present moment through the use of your five senses. This allows for you to effectively distract from or manage anxious thoughts and sensations.

Before there were therapy apps… there were everyday ways we coped. Some of the things we did growing up helped us regulate, express ourselves, or feel connected, even if we didn’t have language for it yet. Today, DBT offers structured, research-backed ways to strengthen those capacities on purpose.

When an individual is experiencing urges or engaging in behaviors such as disordered eating and self-harm, they are often feeling emotionally overloaded. The CARESS model was designed to create self-sufficient, soothing strategies to create more meaning from an urge, rather than being told the individual cannot/is not allowed to engage in a self-destructive behavior. This approach is intended to feel less restrictive and limiting. Engaging in the CARESS skill accomplishes what the self-destructive behaviors hope to achieve, and also decreases the need to engage in these patterns over time.
