Who says you have to gain weight over the holidays?

03/22/2019

Let’s face it, I live in a free society where it is really easy to get food, find shelter, and stay warm. As a cavemen, my existence has never been LESS stressful. None of my friends are dying from famine, wild animal attacks, frost bite or heat exhaustion. Others around the world may incur such fate but no such thing her in the U.S. So, in such a snuggly, carefree culture where everything comes so easily I am going to have to artificially invent some stuff in order to create my own misery and shorten my life. With basic comforts and essential needs to easily met, how is it possible for me and my neighbors to report that we are “STRESSED” all of the time?

As I explore this basic question I keep tripping over the same conclusion . . . I must be creating this stress myself. We generally don't like to accept this conclusion because it means taking responsibility for our actions but hear me out as my goal here is not to lead you to feelings of guilt but rather show you that you are in infinite control.

First fundamental need . . . food. As a caveman my body is used to eating plants and animals and in fact these foods are what make me energetic and healthy. BUT . . . these are NOT the foods I typically desire or select. I live in a culture where organic healthy choices abound and in fact I can even get on my phone or computer and have them delivered right to my door. How easy is that? Yet instead I make a conscious decision to eat processed sugar, carbs and unnatural food-like substrates manufactured in a steel building. Why? Because my list of personal excuses is so robust that I can rationalize that this makes sense. I HAVE to eat that fast food and processed crap because I don't have time for real food, my kids demand it, I’m stressed, I deserve a treat, I simply like it, it’s on my way home, its more convenient, it’s delicious, everyone else is doing it, its gluten free, I have no will power, my parents ate this way, my friends eat this way and I want to fit in (even though I don't fit in my pants), I can't digest vegetables, I hate vegetables, I don't know how to cook vegetables, I hate the taste of water, water makes me p*e too much, it feels good, it makes me happy, it’s too hard to cook, it’s too painful to make change, it’s too painful to not eat sugar, life isn’t worth living without bread, I’m big b***d, I’m too old or too fat to change, if I lose fat I will be more wrinkled, societies obsession with being skinny is unhealthy, the government says I should eat lots of grains, and lastly I simply don’t want to change.

All of these excuses are valid. If you believe them and feel that they represent the truth then you are right, they are true . . . for YOU. Whether they are true for other people is of no relevance as you can only live your life and no one else can. That is and will always be 100% true. I live my professional life hoping to guide those seeking change to a better way and a much richer life. For those that want it, being healthy is a blast, a giant rush of fun and a “high” better than any donut or French fry could ever hope to provide. So, for that 1% that is willing to swim against the current and willing to challenge themselves to see what is possible then this post is for you. Here is my message, “it is never too late”. There is NEVER a point in your life where you need to declare, “I’m too far gone, too fat, too old, too anything”. If you are drawing breath and have desire to explore what’s possible then you and I will dance together with smiles on our face. Just as my friend told me “you can’t change everyone” and I agreed with him, to which I respond, “yes, but I will never stop trying and I will never give up on anyone who simply wants to explore”.

You don't know what next week holds for you. It might be a heart attack but what if you changed your path today? What if you decided to stop playing the stressed-out card and spent half of that energy restoring instead of destroying? Would it be enough to avoid that heart attack? You will never know unless you take the steps. This is the very reason that Chelsea and Dr. Bianco and I exist. We exist as a team of people committed to always forgiving, always guiding and always cheering for the underdog that wants to take a whack at Goliath. If you are tired of being tired and want to kick some ass then let’s saddle up and get moving. Next week holds instore for you the results of decisions made today.

Its just another Monday . . . or not.
So here we are . . . another Monday. Are you excited and looking reward to the weeks adventure? Or are you a bit closer to “oh crap, here we go again”? It dawned on me this morning that if I were a 9 year old boy and was given a gift for Christmas or my birthday I would be smiling from ear to ear and excited by the surprise and wonder of what might be in that box. Contrast that with a spoiled brat who expected a toy for his birthday and in fact told his mother which toy and what color he wanted. The same present would arrive but without the joy and excitement. So comes a new day, a new Monday.

We are not guaranteed any number of days on this planet. Each day is a present and holds the potential for amazing things and wonderful experiences that should make us smile from ear to ear . . . if we let it. Life doesn't send you an email informing you that tomorrow you are going to have a heart attack at 3:15PM or be in a car accident and lose 3 months of your life in recovery. Yet we walk around EXPECTING that these things won't happen to us. We even EXPECT joy and good health even when we don't do the things that would increase the odds of those presents.

Don't miss the tiny miracles that happen each and every day. It is a present from God that we are even able to draw breath today. It is a gift that we get to walk around a city not torn apart by war. We are all privileged to be able to safely commute to work and spend time with coworkers in the field we have chosen because we live in a free culture where we get to choose your line of work. In return we receive comradery, a paycheck, benefits, and the ability to feed our families who love and support our dreams. To take all of that and boil it down to “ba hum bug its Monday” would be to disrespect the beauty of the day.

I know I have done exactly this in the past but recent events in my life have shaken me to realize what a fool I have been in the past. I awaken today (still a little bit of a fool) grateful and humbled by the gifts that lay all around me. If you are reading this know that I am profoundly grateful that you are in my life. You matter to me simply by virtue of us being connected in this worldly experience. We are sharing air and time. We all share dreams of goodness and happiness. I want nothing more than for you to have an awesome day each and every day and be thankful for every bite of nourishment, every hug, every breath of clean air knowing that tomorrow it could all change. That's OK. Today is today and it's a gift I accept with a smile from ear to ear. Expecting little and accepting everything.

The Voice In Your Head

If we talked to our friends the way we often talk to ourselves we wouldn't have any friends. Self-talk can be a hand gr***de or a cashmere blanket. And sometimes the internal chatter can be overwhelming.

We all own some negative ideas and beliefs about ourselves that were constructed years ago through past experiences mixed with comments handed to us by those in our lives. These self-deprecating beliefs are not true or accurate. They themselves are not real or cast in stone. But our CHOICE to hang on to them, replay them and make decisions in our life based on them is what cripples most people. It is the rare individual who takes the time and effort to hunt these falsehoods down, bag them up and cast them into the abyss. You have seen these folks and you often yearn to be like them. To own your life and not play victim to internal negative dialog. That can happen now, today, right this second if you choose to.

Being critical of ourselves serves a purpose but like anything in life it can be taken too far. It is important and valuable to look in the mirror and hold yourself accountable. In fact, self-critique, comparing yourself to a prior version of you or a future desired version of you is the ONLY healthy comparison you should ever make. Do not compare yourself to others as this only leads to unhealthy thoughts of superiority or harmful thoughts of inadequacy.

Negative self-talk, berating yourself, repeating bu****it ideology that you aren’t good enough, or replaying an old mindset of your limitations is garbage thinking and has no place in your life. Cast it out with strong prejudice right now and never again visit that place. But holding yourself accountable, challenging yourself with a higher standard, seeking to improve on your already perfect self is the path to a richer more rewarding existence. To not grow and develop would be a criminal waste of talent and potential. You can be more than you are today and you have higher heights waiting to be celebrated so don't get too comfortable just yet. Now is not the time to rest. Now is the time ask yourself deep questions, purge toxic mindsets and remove all limits in your life so that your growth can inspire and fuel a better humanity. Yes, a better world. When you get better the world is a better place.

So, take today and this weekend and spend time pondering what aspect of your life do you want to enrich? Challenge yourself with an uncomfortable task. Comfort is overrated. Discomfort, pressure and yes at times straight up pain is awesome as it inspires growth and a new direction. Not sure where to start? Then dig in with physical discomfort. Push yourself to go outside tomorrow as soon as you awaken when it is a crisp 34 degrees and take a walk or slow jog wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Embrace the cold. Let it wake your sleepy brain up and thank the good Lord for the opportunity to be alive. Walk in that cold and think of everything you are grateful for. Now ask yourself, “How can I get better?” Life is a limited time offer and each day counts. Act like it. Be something different. Grow, evolve, develop and inspire.

Come learn more ideas of how to grasp your life and thrust healthy change into your mindset. January 5th, 12th, and 19th here at Huber Personalized Medicine we are hosting our “Mind-Body Mission” and you’re invited. Call the office (513-924-5300) and sign up to reserve your seat.

Who's in charge of your brain?

Do you know what’s sad? When you see someone who has EVERYTHING they could ever want or need and yet can’t manage to generate their own happiness. Do you know someone like that? It makes my heart weep to see nice people who can't seem to get out of their own way.

I just took my Dad out for lunch to share a little one on one time and celebrate the season and it made me sad to watch him lament his existence. His illusion was that he wasn't in control of his own life and was being controlled by family members. He is 88 years old and yes needs some assistance with things but in general is fully on autopilot. He chooses instead to look at limits and take inventory of how others have wronged him in the past. He has placed himself in a state of suffering that doesn't really exist. He wants for nothing and has everything he could possibly ask for yet finds the space to create misery.

I see smart people every day to the same thing without realizing it. I myself have been guilty of this in the past. With 95% of our life representing an American Dream come true, we can find ourselves focused on the 5% that isn’t perfect and stew in that tiny spot of imperfection until it festers into an avalanche of self-loathing. WHY?

There are oh so simple ways to change all of that. We are going to dive head first into that discussion starting January 5th at 9AM. I invite you to join us at our Mind-Body Mission conference. Let me share with you a simple idea that could jump start a better mindset NOW. As you awaken each morning, before you set a single foot on the ground, lay there and think of one experience that happened yesterday that you are grateful for or that held special meaning in some way. Focus on it and now state 3 simple things about it and allow yourself to relive it and soak in the joy of that moment. Now having warmed yourself in that moment set out on your day with a smile and better frame of reference.

Studies show that if you arise in the morning and plug into the negative news of the day on TV or radio, that within 6-8 hours you are 27% more likely to label the day as a negative experience. Reality is whatever you make it. What you think is REAL is usually and consistently a simple illusion of opinion and circumstance. You can take the power to drive the color in your sky or you can allow others to dictate your overcast. This is the true science of human nature and it will be summarized and delivered to you in January in three fun Saturday meetings.

The wisdom of the world, from some of the greatest thinkers and shapers has been assembled into a Mind-Body experience that literally could change the direction and certainly the degree of happiness in your life. If you are reading this and choose not to attend then I have to ask, what are you afraid of? What jaded mindset and set of circumstances have robbed you of hope? I believe and can prove to you that every single day above ground is awesome if you choose to see it. If you are breathing right now then you have 2 things:
1. Something to be grateful for and
2. The ability to change the direction and meaning of your life starting right now.

I hope to see you in January. Call our office at (513) 924-5300 and ask to reserve your seat. The conference will be held January 5th, 12th and 19th, lasting 90 minutes on three consecutive Saturdays and each building on the prior week. Materials will be provided so that this experience goes with you and changes your life infinitely. It will be recorded and can be viewed LIVE virtually or later remotely. Let this be a part of a meaningful new year’s resolution. Allow yourself the space to learn something new that could change your perspective. Life is a cool ride but if you feel stuck then shake it off and go at it from a new direction. Every day above ground is AWESOME so come share that with others and tell your story.

The 9 pieces of a Perfect Morning

Today ROCKS!!! Everyday above ground rocks but today is “more better”. (go to town on that, you grammer geeks). So I want to walk you through my version of the perfect start to a perfect day.

1. First of all I got 8.5 hours of completely uninterrupted sleep. Meditated earlier in the day yesterday and so at night I have learned how to totally turn off my mind. Room was cool, pitch black dark and free of all electrical devices.

2. Water first. While my coffee was brewing I had a 12 ounce glass of purified water. Keeping hydrated allows me to burn fat more easily.

3. Black coffee – observing my “fasting” state I had a simple cup of black coffee without coconut oil or butter. Butter and fat will come soon at 10AM.

4. To Do List. As I enjoyed this black rich goodness I sat in quiet solitude at my laptop selecting the top “3” tasks that I wanted to complete today. NOT 27 task, not 3 pages of tasks, just the top three things that matter today. If I accomplish these THREE things then today will have been a success. If I select 27 things and then only get 14 things done I will see that as a failure. Why do that to myself? I like me.

5. Cold Exposure – with my warm coffee in me and my mind focused on a few tasks I head outdoors in shorts and a T-shirt and gloves to go for a short run in the 30 degree weather. I LOVE this feeling. Yes, it is an acquired taste but a habit that lifts me up. See my other posts on “Cold Exposure & Fat Burning”. My mind is allowed to simply float through ideas and take in the morning freshness as my lungs feel the sharp bite of cold air. I start walking and after a short spell start a slow jog. As I hit the open field I go into a 50 yard sprint and then slow back down to catch my breath. I sprint again and again with brief walks to catch my breath. I feel really alive. The brisk air, the trees, the pulse racing . . . this is how the body smiles.

6. Exercise – see the notes above. I did high intensity intervals. Shorts bursts separated by moments to catch up. This is a short effort but one that generates amazing body chemicals to lift my spirit and turn the brain on. This form of exercise stimulates growth hormone and stimulates tight blood sugar control. I have written about this elsewhere.

7. Read. With my brain turned on and my body alive with ambition I sit for a short spell and read something meaningful. It could be a book about Happiness or Mindful living, prayer book, or it could be a science article on a topic I need for my patients. My brain soaks it up like a sponge thirsty for ideas.

8. Sauna – if you have this option its awesome. I bought an infra-red sauna last Christmas and we love it. I turned it on as I headed outdoors for my run and it is now at a toasty 118 degrees and rising. This is a great detox for my body and I have conditioned myself to meditate when I am in the sauna. Or sometimes I read in there. Either way it is a calm, quiet, lovely experience that I enjoy almost daily.

9. Happiness. As I head to the shower I am focusing my mind on what I am grateful for in my life. Did you know that it is impossible to be unhappy when focusing on gratitude? Happiness is built inside of you with intention. Happiness can't be gifted to you, you have to make it. So I make a huge pile of it to share with everyone I meet today.

Now for a hot shower (if you didn't go outside this morning then you might select a cold shower as your cold exposure . . . brrrr) and get ready for the day. In the short 60 to 90 minutes I detailed above I have awakened my body and my brain, detoxed my cells, reset my nervous system for a balanced calm and ignited my endocrine system to produce balanced hormones that fuel my drive. I set my expectations for the day and refused to get swept up into the “To Do List” from hell. Today is going to be thoroughly enjoyable.

There are a lot of other habits you might incorporate into your morning routine. Consider a foam roller for 3-5 minutes, or a stretching routine. Some days I hit the PEMF mat or do oil pulling. If you don’t have a good morning routine that is meaningful but would like to explore this further then check out our Virtuoso program as it holds the answers you are looking for. Go to my Huberpm.com website and look at Health Programs for a listing of what it involves.

Constructing the life you want rather than simply accepting what others hand you makes a world of difference. Thriving is so much more fun than simply surviving. I would love nothing more than for you to come join me . . . living out loud.

Day #20 - Another Challenge - Cold Exposure

Christmas is 4 weeks away. I challenged you yesterday to engage a new habit that you could carry with you into the new year. I suggested intermittent fasting and I hope you give that a trial. But if you tell me that this isn’t your cup of tea or too intimidating to start then that's OK. There are many avenues for self-improvement and allow me to offer another. Cold exposure.

I have written about this in past posts and I posted a video on InstaGram. Exposing ourselves to cold weather stimulates something called brown fat which is wonderful. Brown fat helps you burn up your white fat. Brown fat helps to keep you leaner and healthier. Higher levels of brown fat equate to reduced risk for heart disease. AND . . . it’s winter so its FREE!

I love to go outside in the morning dressed only in shorts, light T-shirt and gloves. I walk or run or even do short sprints but I stay exposed to the cold for at least 10 minutes. Start small, maybe just 3-4 minutes and build up your tolerance.

There are other benefits to doing this. Being outdoors is wonderful for your sense of calm and exposure to nature reduces blood pressure. Enjoy the trees and soak up the peacefulness. The exercise stimulates dopamine and the increased oxygen you breath in helps stimulate better serotonin and a third bonus is greater sun light exposure, even if it is overcast, all equates to a sharper, more pleasant and peaceful brain. Many studies show that these elements, the outdoors, increased oxygen, exercise and sunlight all work to elevate your mood.

So make a decision and COMMIT to going outside at least three days per week and build this up to a daily ENJOYABLE experience. Dare to be weird. Let your neighbors wonder if you have lost your mind. My neighbors know that I am certifiably crazy . . . and lean and healthy and vibrantly alive and happy. Let’s be happy together. Give it a try and let me know your experience.

Holiday Challenge Day #19 - Plenty of time to kick butt.
Lets Talk Intermittent Fasting

Exactly 28 days until Christmas which is amply plenty and oodles of time to create a habit of significance. If you are doing the Virtuoso Program with us then you are learning new ideas every day and walking a different path that will net huge change by January 1st. If you aren’t doing the Virtuoso Program then I have to wonder why you aren’t interested in living the best version of yourself? Gentle nudge here but seriously . . . every day above ground is worth celebrating and living out loud. So here is my challenge for the remainder of this week: start something new that you can maintain as a new habit into the new year. May I suggest Intermittent Fasting?

If you are looking to shake up your boring routine and engage a proven method for getting younger then explore Intermittent Fasting. The number of studies both past and present has become staggering. What was once a niche notion is now a solid medical approach to cleaner living and healthier cells. The simple idea is to restrict calories for a period of time which forces your body to become less inflamed and more efficient. This is NOT calorie restriction. This is not intended to reduce the number of calories you eat but allocate them to a specific period of time. Many studies have explored different options but I would say if you are new to this then simply restrict calories to 12 hours of the day. This means fasting from 8PM to 8AM. Fairly easy to accomplish and if you are ketogenic then this is a breeze.

Looking to step up your game? Then try a longer fast, eating only 8-10 hours of the day. I am personally trying to fast until 10AM and stop eating at 7PM. That is only a 9 hour window to consume calories. Why? People that eat all day long and especially if they eat in the middle of the night are never allowing the gut to rest. It elevates insulin secretion which is inflammatory to the body. The bowel is always processing foods and this creates some degree of oxidative stress. Going a little hungry allows ghrelin, one of our appetite hormones to rise and this in turn stimulates some very healthy responses by the body. It will kick up our growth hormone and help create nitric oxide to dilate blood vessels. We see insulin drop and insulin resistance will reverse. Inflammatory chemicals like CRP begin to drop which slows down the rate of aging. So in general people report feeling less inflamed, more mentally agile, better mood and yes even weight loss.

The biochemical alterations that occur under this model are very healthy and yes it will serve to reverse metabolic syndrome. The foods we do choose to eat are obviously key here and I would suggest a whole foods diet loaded with meat, vegetables and healthy fats including nuts and seeds. I care less about the amount of what you eat and more care towards real foods of high quality. Obviously lower carb is desired and I would definitely avoid wheat.

So, take this challenge and see what you are made of. Telling yourself ahead of time what you are going to do will start a course of action that you will more likely implement. Simply thinking it’s interesting and “waiting to see” if you can do this will net lousy results. Go into this with intention and commitment. Set your phone with an alarm to signify when you can eat and when to stop. Take it seriously. I think you will love how you feel.

We will talk in January at the Mind-Body Mission course about how to plug into body sensations and use them to your advantage to change habits. If you really want to become a ninja then join us. Call the office and reserve your seat for the Mind-Body Mission on January 5th. You’re here on the planet anyway so why not become cool and groovy and optimize your ride? See you in January.

Holiday challenge - day #17 into day #18

Here is my challenge for your week. CHANGE, change your morning routine. Most of us awaken with a rolodex (OK to anyone under the age of 45 . . . what’s a rolodex??) Stop with the running list of “To Do’s” and instead replace it with at least 15 minutes of what you are grateful for. Start your brain’s day with a positive thought about the good things that populate your actual existence. You are leaving your driveway to head out into the world but WHY? What did you just leave behind that is worth fighting for? Something there is amazing and awesome and worth sharing with the rest of humanity. Take this with you, don't leave it behind. Take the love you feel and the passion that moves you into the workplace and share it with everyone you touch. Grateful for your daughter or your son. Grateful that your spouse loves you, despite your crusty ways. Humbled by the fact that God gives you strength despite you lack of follow through. It's OK. This is life. This is what we all experience. Doubt mixed with hesitation and a dash of oppression with an expectant clash in the not so distant future.

It’s OK. If we choose to see the light . . . if we choose to BE the light . . . it can all come correct and be alright. Trust in YOU. YOU be YOU. You decide that loving your family and bringing that strength to your job is enough. Being honest and accountable is all that is expected of you. There is strength and power in you that lives quietly below the surface. Let it rise. Let it breath. TRUST that others will recognize it and sing that chorus with you in a celebration of life. In celebration of loving human existence. Maybe in celebration of life itself. There is the recognition of Christ in us all if we are not afraid to share it and celebrate it in these dark times. People crave leadership. Simply be a stepping stone for faith.

So, my challenge to you today is to dig deep and find the joy that is inherently within you. Forget the problems of the day until at least 8:30 and instead chose to prime your brain with gut wrenching commitment to FEEL the energy of your inner soul. You be YOU. Be honest. Be heartfelt. Be strong. Be committed to a mission more noble than a time clock. Each day matters so prove yourself to YOU. Make today matter.

Holiday Challenge marches on . . .

It is day 17 of our Holiday Challenge. How is your score board looking thus far? Personally, I had a slip this Thanksgiving weekend. Started well on Thanksgiving day with a great workout with my son and stayed true to plan only having half a piece of pecan pie and half a piece of carrot cake.

Friday, I went for a nice bike ride so I got my workout in but by afternoon a virus started and knocked me down a bit. I took a “Viracid” pack and some vitamin D & C and felt amazingly different within 24 hours. With my resolve weakened somewhat I fell off my Keto plan for a couple of days but I am back today and feeling good.

I did manage to get a solid workout in on Sunday with friends. I have a group of friends that have been gathering for more than a decade every Sunday through the winter months to do a group workout and it is wonderful. We motivate each other and create a wonderful energy that amps up everyone’s personal effort. Afterward we all have protein shake and get caught up with everyone life. I don't know what I would do all winter long without this wonderful group to keep me motivated and on track. Maybe you would want to consider doing this with your friends. We set up a number of workout stations and use a “Gym Boss” timer that beeps when it is time to change stations. Everyone, regardless of age, size or s*x can adjust their individual effort at each station to suit their needs. Given that this group is not 25 years old we also account for individual joint limitations, etc.

So off we go into the third week of our challenge. Count your blessings thus far. What have you learned about yourself? Are you still tracking your measurements such as heart rate, belly fat, weight or sleep hours? These numbers serve to motivate you and keep you moving forward.

Struggling with diet or your personal plan? Sit with Chelsea and get your act together. It’s not too late as December hasn't even arrived yet. You still have ample time to start your Holiday Challenge today and begin your journey in the Virtuoso Program. See our website under “Wellness Programs” and read more about everything that the Virtuoso program is. If you have any thoughts about starting January 1st feeling motivated and on track then this is your most enjoyable and comprehensive path to do so. Treat yourself nice and come share with us your vision for upgrading your version of YOU! We can help make it fun and easy. Simply call our office at (513) 924-5300 and ask for information about starting the Virtuoso program today.
