This summer, OCMEA President Emily Riker traveled to NAfME Hill Day in Washington, D.C., to advocate for music education on Capitol Hill. Emily and the Music Education Department would be grateful for your help now!

Currently, Congress is deciding on the FY-2026 Federal Education Budget. Proposed budgets include billions of dollars in cuts to Title I–IV and other important avenues of arts education funding. These cuts could directly impact access to music and arts programs in schools across the country.

On Saturday, CCM Music Education students and alumni attended the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (GCCAOSA) workshop. The day featured David Row, who offered creative strategies to bring storytelling, movement, singing, and playing instruments into the classroom. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students and alumni to learn, connect, and grow together as music educators.

We were excited to welcome Bernardo Lopez back to CCM, where he spoke with our strings class about his work as director of MYCincinnati. This free after school music program for students in grades 3-12 serves the Price Hill community, using music to foster connection, discipline, and creativity in young people.

Bernardo graduated from CCM in 2011 with a degree in Music Education with a jazz specialization. It was a meaningful visit that reminded us how music educators can make a powerful impact—both in and beyond the classroom.

We are excited to welcome Brandon Boone as one of our new graduate assistants in Music Education!

Brandon is a proud graduate of CCM and a native of Boone County, Kentucky. He graduated in 2019 with Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and began teaching career at Grant County Middle School in Dry Ridge, Kentucky. He later moved to Montana to teach at Libby Middle High School, where he taught band, percussion ensemble, jazz ensemble, and music appreciation. Most recently, he served as band director at Gallatin County High School before returning to CCM in 2025 to pursue a Master’s degree in Music Education.

Brandon’s primary instrument is the saxophone. He also enjoys playing bass guitar, bluegrass music, and spending time outdoors camping with his family. He and his wife, Alexandra, have a cat named Cheddar and are excited to welcome their second child soon.

Fun facts: Brandon loves Costco, Half-Price Books, good coffee, and cooking on his Blackstone griddle.

Welcome back to CCM, Brandon!
