Rev. Jesse Jackson taught us that fighting for justice means showing up – with courage, vision, and love for our people.

Today we honor his life. From his work alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to founding Operation PUSH, he spent more than six decades fighting for global human dignity.

His legacy reminds us that real change comes from persistence in faith.

Rest in peace. 🕊️

The fight for maternal mortality STILL exists but thank you Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens for your fight in pioneering medicine and reproductive health.

Dr. Dickens was a pioneering obstetrician-gynecologist who championed teen pregnancy prevention, cancer screening, and safe childbirth for Black women.

Her advocacy still echoes in today’s fight against maternal mortality disparities.

Let’s celebrate the first black registered nurse🎉

Mary Eliza Mahoney broke racial barriers in health care by becoming the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a professional nursing license.

She co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses, paving the way for diversity, respect, and leadership in the field.

Tag your favorite nurse and tell them thank you for all you do!

Our hearts carry more than blood – they carry our burdens.

From neighborhood stress and work demands to racism, financial strain, and daily survival – the toll on our hearts is real.

Black Americans are more likely to experience high blood pressure, chronic stress, and heart disease, not because we’re broken, but because the world often weighs harder on us.

🫀This American Heart Month, remember: caring for your heart means caring for your peace.

💪🏾Breathe. Move. Rest. Connect. Heal.

Because your heart deserves rest too. ❤️

💉🩸Dr. Drew is a blood plasma and transfusion pioneer. He revolutionized emergency medicine by developing large scale blood banks during World War II.

His research and blood storage and plasma separation has saved millions of lives – and he fought against segregated blood donation policies.

👩🏽‍🎓 We celebrate the first black woman to earn a PhD in psychology. Dr. Prosser researched how racism and school segregation affected mental health and identity. Her early insights paved the way for today’s focus on culturally competent mental healthcare.

“I vaccinated, my own daughter, — who is now in medical school learning to provide the same life-saving care for other others.”

Renee Mahaffey Harris, Closing The Health Gap President and CEO, wrote an op-Ed piece for the on protecting Ohio’s children by standing up for a child of vaccinations.

She says, “Vaccines are one of the most effective tools. We have to protect ourselves, our children, and our loved ones. They help prevent disease, reduce hospitalizations, and save lives. In the last 50 years, vaccination efforts have saved an estimate estimated 154 million lives worldwide.”

Together, we’re honoring those who make a way for a healthier future. Let’s celebrate the power of collaboration and the remarkable contributions of our Black health leaders.

📺Did you catch our latest appearance on What’s Happening in Health: Healthy Diversity? 👀

Our President & CEO Renee Mahaffey Harris explains how our work throughout the year doesn’t start or stop with the expo. All year we have experiences and initiatives to help you manage your healthcare. The expo is just a way to get us all together!

She makes a good point that the first step to managing your health is a primary care doctor.

Save the date and bring the family. We hope to see you at the Health Expo on April 25th at Washington Park.
