Breast cancer surgery involves more than just removing cancer—it’s also about preserving the patient’s confidence and comfort. Advances in surgical care mean patients can heal faster, feel less discomfort, and maintain their sense of self.

Dr. Dawn Cox, CBS breast surgical oncologist, explains: “Our goal is not only to remove cancer safely but also to maintain the best possible cosmetic outcome for every patient. Enhanced recovery pathways allow many patients to go home the same day—helping them heal faster and feel more comfortable. Breast surgeons provide patients with hope and strength for the future.”

Finding a healthy and tasty dessert to make for the holidays can be challenging, but we've found a great recipe with an unexpected ingredient. These High-Fiber Black Bean Brownies pack a ton of nutrients while tasting like your favorite chocolatey dessert. They are sure to please the whole party!

Ingredients
1 (15-oz.) can no-salt-added black beans, rinsed
3 large eggs
¼ cup neutral oil, such as canola or avocado
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
½ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup cocoa powder
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon instant coffee granules
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup semisweet chocolate chips

Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 9-inch-square baking pan with cooking spray.

Place rinsed beans in a food processor; process until a mostly smooth, thick paste forms, about 1 minute, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed.

Add 3 large eggs, ¼ cup oil, 2 tablespoons maple syrup and 1 tablespoon vanilla; pulse until combined, about 5 pulses. Add ½ cup sugar, ¼ cup cocoa and ½ teaspoon each baking powder, coffee granules and salt; pulse until thoroughly combined, about 5 pulses.

Transfer the batter to the prepared pan, spreading into an even layer. Sprinkle ½ cup chocolate chips over the top.

Bake until the center is fully set and the edges just begin pulling away from the pan’s sides, 23 to 25 minutes. Let cool in the pan on a wire rack until room temperature, about 30 minutes, before cutting and serving.

While some of you have heard the news, we'd like to share the official announcement that Dr. Lydia Hernandez is retiring, effective April 15, 2026. We are saddened to see her leave CBS, but know that she has worked tirelessly for her patients over the past 35 years and she deserves the time to rest with her family and friends.

Dr. Hernandez leaves behind a successful career of helping women in one of the hardest times of their lives, a journey she herself experienced. Her surgical expertise provided hope and a future to so many women in our community.

Please read her statement below and help us to say goodbye to Dr. Hernandez, as she begins the process of handing over her patients to the wonderful and skilled hands of Dr. Dawn Cox. Current patients will be contacted over the next several months to transfer their care, but to schedule a new appointment with Dr. Cox, please call 513-221-2544.
