📣📣📣Medicare Advantage HMOs and Medicaid Plans For 2026
HMO plans and Medicaid plans control costs by only approving orders (medications, imaging, labwork) ordered by their own HMO in-network primary care doctors. This means they might not pay for those tests or medications if they are ordered by a non-HMO or Medicaid primary care physician. McGilligan MD is out of network with all insurances since direct primary care does not bill insurance at all.
Our orders and prescriptions are still valid but your plan may not pay for them. If your insurance does not pay we may recommend using cost saving options like GoodRx or pharmacy savings clubs. We may also recommend using the low negotiated cash rates we have with Labcorp (most basic tests are less than $10) or using Proscan cash pricing. We often recommend these options for commercially insured patients as well. Often they end up being less expensive than going through your insurance. Our doctors can advise you as to whether paying cash or going through insurance makes the most financial sense for you.
Increasingly, insurance companies are restricting care and denying prior authorizations. While it happens with all plans, it is worse with HMOs. This is occurring even as prices to purchase these plans have gone up significantly. Medicare Advantage HMO plans may seem like a reasonable choice when people are healthy, but once you start needing MRIs or CT scans or get diagnosed with a chronic illness, they no longer are cost effective.
