🖤 Black History Month Spotlight 🖤
This February, we honor James McCune Smith, M.D., a true pioneer in healthcare. Born in 1813, Dr. Smith became the first African American to earn a medical degree — graduating from the University of Glasgow Medical School at a time when Black students weren’t even allowed to attend U.S. medical schools. Upon returning to the U.S., he also became the first Black physician to own and operate a pharmacy, breaking barriers in both medicine and community care. 

His courage and commitment to equitable health access inspire us at Total Training Services — where we train individuals in CPR & First Aid, Medication Administration, DSP skills, and more. All of these certifications empower people to serve, protect, and care for others — continuing the legacy of leaders like Dr. Smith.

One remarkable pioneer is Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, who in 1893 performed one of the very first successful open‑heart surgeries and founded Provident Hospital — the first non‑segregated hospital and training school in the United States, ensuring quality care and education for all.
