Neck pain in athletes isn’t just about the neck.

It’s often a combination of joint mobility, muscle tension, and how your body handles load during training.

In this video, I’m assessing:
• How the joints in the neck are moving
• Which muscles are overworking or restricted
• Where motion is being lost

Then using Active Release Technique (ART) to restore normal tissue movement and reduce tension.

For athletes, this matters because:
• Limited neck mobility can affect lifting mechanics and safety while running/biking
• Muscle restrictions can lead to headaches or upper trap tightness
• Compensation patterns can impact performance and recovery

The goal isn’t just to “loosen things up” — it’s to help your body move better under load so you can train without pain.

If you’re dealing with neck tightness, headaches, or discomfort during training, it may be more than just something to stretch.

Why do runners always feel like their hip flexors are tight?

It’s not always because they need more stretching.

When you run, your hip flexors are repeatedly working to bring your leg forward. Over time this can make them feel tight or overworked — especially if other muscles aren’t doing their job.

Common contributors include:
• Repetitive hip flexion during running
• Weak glutes forcing hip flexors to compensate
• Long hours of sitting outside of training

Instead of just stretching, the solution is often to improve hip extension and strengthen the glutes so the workload is shared properly.

If you’re a runner dealing with tight hips, hamstring tension, or low back discomfort, it may be more of a movement issue than a flexibility issue.

Pain isn’t always where the problem starts—and that’s where most people get stuck.

With SFMA (Selective Functional Movement Assessment), I break down how your body moves as a whole to uncover the real source of the issue. The spot that hurts is often just the symptom, not the cause.

Instead of chasing pain, I focus on fixing the underlying dysfunction so your body can move the way it’s supposed to. That’s how you get lasting results—not temporary relief.

Hi, I’m Dr. Brian Trautman, Chiropractor and Athletic Trainer at Optimal Health & Performance.

I help athletes and active adults reduce pain, improve movement, and stay healthy doing the activities they enjoy. My approach combines chiropractic care, soft tissue treatment, and movement-based rehab to address the root cause of pain — not just the symptoms.

My background includes training as both a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) and Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), along with advanced techniques like Active Release Technique (ART) and dry needling.

Whether you’re dealing with back pain, running injuries, tight hips, shoulder pain, or training-related aches, my goal is to help you move better and get back to what you love.

In the body, everything is connected. The hamstrings and shoulders are no different.

The hard part is discovering HOW it’s connected and what’s effecting what.

That’s where I come in! Its easy to diagnose a problem in the shoulder when you have shoulder pain.. The trick is to determine WHAT is causing the shoulder issue in the first place.

Are your hamstrings to blame? Let’s find out!

Low back pain is often blamed on a “slipped” or “herniated” disc — but the reality is more nuanced.

Your lumbar discs act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae. When irritated or overloaded, they can become sensitive and cause pain in the low back, glutes, or even down the leg.

Here’s what most people don’t realize:

✔ Disc pain doesn’t always mean something is “out of place.”
✔ Many disc changes on MRI are normal and pain-free.
✔ Discs respond well to graded movement and proper loading.
✔ Complete rest is rarely the solution.

The goal isn’t to “fix” a disc — it’s to improve how your spine moves, loads, and tolerates stress.

If you’re dealing with persistent low back pain, a movement-based assessment can help determine what your spine needs to calm down and build resilience.
