In the wee hours of the morning after a long day and night of being on call, my shoulders relaxed when I saw one of the doulas walk into the room who has been busy with a few of our patients this month. She’s truly there to support mom and dad, but she makes my job a little easier! Not only can she offer additional support in terms of coping with labor, but she can help translate options and decisions for families, and encourage them to ask questions or take time when needed.

Doulas fill in the spaces that I can’t always be present in, especially when I might have multiple families working to meet their babies. She has the capacity to give the room an even warmer and safe feeling, which can be imperative for the “psyche” part of a labor.

Doulas are shown to help improve outcomes for families and their babies, and are a proven way to help provide pain relief for laboring moms! In Ohio, doulas across the state have been working hard to have insurance reimbursement, and currently are covered by Medicaid. They are an asset to our care team! So often I wonder if they know how much they offer the midwife support as well, because by being present and doing what they do best, it allows me to step back, drink some water, and take a breath before continuing on. I am so thankful for all of the doulas in our area who support our patients! ❤️

The same movements that help get the baby in, help to get the baby out. Save the slow and calming jams for later on, and between resting during early labor, I’ll lunge with you and SAFELY drop it low with ya. My patients KNOW I love a stanky leg in active labor 😆 wish I was joking.

I absolutely adore our in-hospital birth center! This is one of two birth center suites, set apart from the regular labor unit. We monitor baby and contraction patterns with Doppler and feel/observation only! We have all of the safety equipment for baby in the room if they should need it. If anything changes making the labor more high risk or if our laboring person decides they would want epidural pain relief, the labor unit is a short wheelchair ride away!

The privilege of walking alongside pregnant people as they journey towards building families and new chapters in their lives, is only matched by walking alongside the future midwives going out into the world.

My heart is absolutely filled seeing the kindness and goodness that will add to the profession that is only taken on when you are called to do it. I am honored as a young midwife to offer the knowledge I have gained in the last few years, and to be reminded of the excitement and the privilege of providing midwifery care.

Thank you to these sweet baby midwives! 🥹🥹🥹🥰🥰🥰🥰

Have you seen “Aftershock” yet? Everyone who is providing obstetric care to people of color need to see this film. Anyone who doesn’t know how America created a smear campaign against midwives needs to see this film. Anyone who still doesn’t see that the maternal mortality crisis that we have in this country, especially for women of color, can be partially linked to our country’s shamefully high C-section rate needs to see this film. Bravo. This film is absolutely phenomenal. Please watch it!

Ohhhhh!! We love to see it! Subscribing to ACOG has been one of my better choices in 2021. The literature and guidance is usually more progressive and patient centered than what is always used in practice. It’s a wonderful tool in conversations about the most up to date evidence to inform current practice. A lot of their clinical guidance is available for free on their website! Can’t see it? I’ll try and get you what you need 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
