💬"I’d say the biggest gap is recognizing the disease that addiction is and getting it treated, and treating it like any other disease like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease..." says BrightView Health Physician Assistant, Frank Chilli.

❗The gap between release from prison and receiving addiction care is dangerous. During the first few weeks after release, the mortality rate can be 10 to 40 times higher than those in the general population. This is why it's critical to provide the appropriate resources and help for justice involved patients.

💡Addiction is rarely just about substances. For many people, there is something deeper happening within - depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, and so on. Sometimes these conditions are pre-existing to substance use, and other times they develop as a result.

These conditions actively shape how addiction develops and why it is so hard to break. This is what clinicians call dual diagnosis.🩺 With proper attention and care, we can successfully treat both conditions and help our patients thrive in recovery.

☀️Join us on April 29th at 12pm EST, as a panel of experts brings together leaders from law enforcement, medical treatment, and community supervision to explore the realities of addiction and reentry within the justice system.

Through evidence-based insights and frontline experience, panelists - Vice President of Medical Affairs at BrightView Deana Kimes, Police Chief of Newtown Tom Synan, and Chief Probation Officer Tiana Johnson - will examine why overdose risk spikes after release, how SUD is clinically identified, and why treatment, not punishment, is essential to improving outcomes.

Signup for the forum using this link: https://bit.ly/BVcrimeVF

Discussion will focus on addressing misconceptions about medication-assisted treatment (MAT), understanding the barriers people face in the first weeks after release, and highlighting the collaborative practices that reduce recidivism, support recovery, and create safer, more effective reentry pathways.

💡ATTENDEES WILL BE ABLE TO:
• Explain the unique risks and challenges faced by individuals with SUD during reentry.
• Understand how SUD is clinically identified and how appropriate treatment levels are determined.
• Describe what evidence-based treatment looks like within the justice system.
• Identify common misconceptions within justice settings and how they influence outcomes.
• Understand the core components of an effective reentry plan.
• Recognize the value of cross-agency collaboration.

For people living with opioid addiction, the days following release from jail or prison are among the most dangerous they will face.⚠️

This is due to that fact that during incarceration, most people with opioid use disorder stop using opioids. While that may sound positive, it creates a serious medical risk when they are released.

💡To learn more about why overdose risk increases after release from prison, check out our latest blog: https://www.brightviewhealth.com/blog/the-risk-of-overdose-after-release-and-how-we-can-prevent-it/

Methadone is a medication for addiction treatment that carries a heavy stigma. Many people see it as trading one drug addiction for another - but this is not the case. It is one of the most studied, scientifically proven way to effectively and safely treat addiction.💡

At BrightView, we offer methadone at several of our centers that are also opioid treatment programs (OTPs).🩺 Having OTPs in our centers allows patients to easily pick up or take their dose of medication, like methadone, under the supervision of our medical staff without needing to go to a separate pharmacy.
