🌷 Spring is finally here (even though it may not feel like it!!!) — and with the change in weather, we’re also seeing a shift in the illnesses affecting our kids.

The good news? Winter respiratory illnesses are starting to slow down 🙌
The not-so-good news? There’s still some influenza hanging around… ugh.

🤢 Stomach bugs (gastroenteritis) are still making the rounds. We’re getting quite a few calls about kids with vomiting, and sometimes diarrhea and fever as well.

📞 Our nurses are also hearing from LOTS of parents about coughs right now. These can be caused by:
• Spring colds (upper respiratory infections)
• Post-nasal drip from seasonal allergies
• Asthma flare-ups

🌼 Speaking of allergies — they’re in full swing. With warmer temps, blooming trees, and rising pollen counts, we’re seeing more allergy symptoms and asthma flares, especially with all this back-and-forth weather.

👶 A quick reminder: seasonal allergies are rare under age 1, and most kids don’t start showing symptoms until age 2 or older.

Want help figuring out if it’s allergies? This is a great resource from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia:

😷 We’re also seeing more springtime sore throats, including:
• An uptick in strep throat cases
• A few cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease
• And yes — sometimes allergies can cause sore throats too

💡 Bottom line: Spring brings sunshine… but also a mix of viruses, allergies, and asthma triggers. If you’re not sure what’s going on with your child, give us a call — we’re always happy to help! 845.888.2200

🌸🤧 Spring Allergies Are Here! Tips from Circleville Pediatrics 🤧🌸

Spring is a beautiful time of year—but for many kids (and parents!), it also brings sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny noses. Here are some simple ways to help manage seasonal allergies and keep your child feeling their best:

🌼 Keep windows closed
As tempting as fresh air is, keeping windows shut during high pollen days can reduce symptoms.

🧼 Wash up after outdoor play
Have your child change clothes and wash hands/face (or shower!) after being outside to remove pollen.

🌙 Shower before bed
Pollen can stick to hair and skin—rinsing off helps prevent nighttime symptoms.

🏠 Use a HEPA filter
Air purifiers can help reduce allergens inside your home.

👕 Limit outdoor time during peak pollen hours
Pollen levels are usually highest in the early morning and on windy days.

💊 Use medications as directed
Over-the-counter allergy medications like Zyrtec, Claritin, Xyzal and nasal sprays can be helpful- check with us if you have dosing questions.

👀 Watch for symptoms
Common signs include sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, congestion, and coughing. If symptoms are interfering with sleep, school, or play, reach out to us!

We’re here to help your family breathe easier this spring 🌷

👶18 facts for parents of newborns👶

1) There will be sleepless nights. But it does get better. Usually by 1-2 months.

2) Grunting and straining are mostly normal. If it seems like true pain, call us.

3) Diaper rash will happen! Have diaper cream on hand. If it doesn’t work might be yeast, call us.

4) White patches in the mouth that can’t be rubbed off can be thrush. Treatment will be needed, so call us.

5) We take fever really seriously in this age group. Anything over 100, call us immediately.

6) Spitting up can be normal. If every feed is forceful or pain associated, call us.

7) Feed on demand at first. It will give baby practice (breast or formula fed) and get milk supply in.

8)😎 Watch for yellow to the eyes and skin. If significantly yellow or not feeding well, it’s more concerning so call us.

9) You can supplement a baby with formula and still have a successful breastfeeding journey. We don’t have to rush to it but sometimes it helps.

10) Get advice from family and friends you trust. Ok to ignore the rest. Don’t ask on social media.

11) Spend lots of time talking, singing and reading to your newborn. It’s probably the single most important thing you can do for their development.

12) Place them to sleep in a boring crib. Someone will tell you that they’ll sleep better on their tummy. Ignore that person.

13) Every week is a new phase. Be flexible where you can. If you hate this phase, there’s always next week.

14) It’s a lonely and hard time to be a newborn parent right now. Cut yourself some slack if not everything is going as you planned.

15) It’s ok to not love the newborn phase. It doesn’t make you a bad parent.

16) Some sadness with new baby can be normal. But if it feels too much or lasts longer than a few weeks, call us, we are here for you.

17) All parents should be allowed to make their own choices. No one does everything the same. And there’s rarely a “right” way.

18) If things seems hard, they will get easier/better. Hang in there!!

The FDA has removed the age restriction for neffy 1 mg, expanding access to a needle-free epinephrine option for children at risk of severe allergic reactions.

Eligibility is now based on weight alone, meaning patients who weigh at least 33 lbs (15 kg) can use neffy 1 mg regardless of age. This change is especially important for younger children who previously met the weight requirement but were excluded due to age limits.

For FARE, this matters because increasing epinephrine options help overcome real-world treatment barriers. More choices allow families to select what works best for them and empower families to act confidently when treating anaphylaxis.
