Language Is Literacy SLP at The TALK Team Sacramento

Language Is Literacy SLP at The TALK Team Sacramento Speech and Language Therapist focusing on communication and literacy intervention for children. In my practice I focus on language and literacy.

There is a strong connection between language and literacy. In order for children to be successful with reading acquisition and comprehension, they must understand language. That is where we, the SLPs, can help.

I don’t know about you, but the BEST therapy session come after the phrase “I have an idea!” has been uttered!
I don’t know if it will work, but I’m willing to explore the possibilities and I think THAT is the biggest gift I can give my students, the courage to explore the possibilities!
What things have happened in your therapy room or even life when you just explored the possibilities?

It’s National Reading Month!
Reading is packed with language concepts and skills.
If those foundational language skills are weak, reading skills are going to continue to crumble as we make our way through academics.
What reading skills will you explore more this month?

Kids deserve strong voices, strong language, and strong literacy.

Reading doesn’t develop naturally for most children, it’s built on language. When kids struggle with sounds, vocabulary, or understanding language, reading becomes hard too.

Through structured literacy, explicit, systematic instruction that teaches:
• speech sounds
• how sounds connect to letters
• word reading and spelling
• vocabulary and comprehension

We don’t “wait and see.” We build the foundation step by step so kids can become confident readers and communicators.

This work is bigger than speech.
It’s brain-building. It’s literacy. It’s life skills

💡Did you know our brains aren’t naturally wired for reading?

🧠 How the Brain Learns to Read

Reading doesn’t happen in just one part of the brain. It’s a team effort between systems that work together to help children become confident readers:

👁️ Visual Word Recognition – noticing letters and word patterns

🔤 Sound Processing – connecting letters to speech sounds

🧠 Word Memory – storing words so reading becomes automatic

💬 Meaning – understanding vocabulary and ideas

✂️ Syllables & Word Parts – breaking big words into manageable chunks

When one area needs extra support, you might notice:
• Slow or effortful reading
• Guessing at words
• Difficulty sounding words out
• Spelling challenges
• Reading words but not understanding the story

Reading develops through strong connections between these systems, and the great news is, these skills can grow with the right support and instruction.
