Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is an umbrella term that encompasses several components. Unless all of these are being incorporated into your lymphatic routine, it isn’t truly CDT. While some people can get away with just MLD, you really can’t just take one piece of the pie. Without all components, many home programs fall apart and patients experience swelling again. Additionally, you shouldn’t be in active treatment for “years”. CDT takes 4-6 weeks for an arm, 6-8 for legs. While this is a standard and certainly not true for some, most of your journey with lymphedema should include good home management. Laser work to this knee will help improve circulation, increase lymphangiomotoricity, decrease fibrotic tissue build up and decrease the overall healing time. Another progress picture from week 1 to week 4 of Complete Decongestive Therapy! Even though this case was complicated with heavy fibrosis, hyperpigmentation, and hyperkeratosis, the L leg is still experiencing reduction and a decrease in those progressive skin changes! Great work!

In-elastic compression garments are widely used in therapy! These often serve as a great alternative to elastic compression (stockings, pantyhose, etc) for patients who do not have enough hand strength to pull on other garments. When applied correctly, in-elastic compression can be just as effective.

Did you know these are all symptoms of Stage 2 and 3 Lymphedema? Many patients complain that in the early stages of their chronic swelling, their skin began to change as well. There’s a reason for this! It’s called Diffusion Distance, which increases as lymphatic fluid begins filling the space between the skin and underlying cardiovascular structures.

Another amazing example of a 4 week transformation. Very involved legs typically take 6-8 weeks of intensive treatment to reach plateau and begin Phase II of treatment. This patient is already feeling the improvement with decreased circumference and vastly improved skin condition.
