The story behind our new logo
"Wings and Wheels: The Unfolding Tale of Wild Daisy Homestead"
The journey of our new logo and trademark is deeply intertwined with the ongoing evolution of Wild Daisy Homestead.
When starting this website a year ago, I wanted to create a place that feels like an adventure to be had once arriving into our cyber location. How could we keep the magical and whimsical feel online the way we have it here on the farm?
I had all these visions in my head, now the need for putting them into the aesthetics of our site was on my "to-do"list.
I truly loved our logo with the daisy and our name however, I feel like that was perhaps the stepping stone towards ideas and opportunities that are now representing all the changes that have taken place over the years since moving to this little mountain town in the country. We are growing and more clarity would be needed for what we do and why. So my imagination and experiences began to infuse.
Wild Daisies have always been my favorite flower. They are such an adorable flower with the ability to have an elegant beauty at times. Their simple white petals that surround the yellow centers offer a timeless, elegant, cottagecore aesthetic that is both humble yet sophisticated. Daisies do not need anyone to interfere and they can choose the perfect places to take root when they're good and ready. At the same time, they can be pruned and grown in pots and flower beds by those who enjoy their significant yet gentle touch added to every garden where they are present.
Historically, Their anti-inflammatory properties made daisies a highly sought after addition to herbal medicines, tinctures, teas, and poultices; used in natural healing. As such the dried daisies growing here on our homestead are also used in natural healing salves and herbal remedies. That is where the daisy fits in nicely as a main center piece in the logo. The salve we created is made with direct intention and desires of helping everyone who uses it to have a more comfortable and active life.
Daisies are also a huge plus and definitely a need when planting pollinator gardens and creating spaces where the bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and dragonflies seek out and want to spend their lives. Pollinating is their specialty and they add such a whimsical feel to everyplace they are present.
During my lifetime I have had many encounters with these magical little creatures known as dragonflies. Several times I have had them come to visit me, sitting on my finger. my arm, a nearby fence line I've been working on, or the handle of a basket used for collecting eggs.
The dragonfly has always been for me a symbol that I'm going to be ok, things will work out and that blessings are coming that will be needed for me to work the land, have a home, and create a future. The first time a dragonfly landed to share these messages with me here on our new property, came at the perfect moment. A time when my sadness and confusion of what was happening seemed to be engulfing me with broken and shattered dreams. As I sat watching my chickens peck and scratch enjoying the sun, a dragonfly appeared. It sat on my finger for a while then flew to the handle of the egg basket. I even captured a picture of this dragonfly. A warm feeling of " It's going to be ok" engulfed me deep within. From that moment forward I did everything in my power to start getting in tune with the Universe and the Almighty Creator of it. It was time to dry the tears and start anew. As it stands right now, I can see what an amazing opportunity God has helped us turn this into. Once again He knew best.
The amethyst coloring of the dragonfly on our official logo represents the month in which I was born. Not only the month but also the day. February 29 .... That's right, I have had the pleasure and blessing all my life of having such a unique day that I officially entered into this world. In the past, many have viewed it as a bad luck day but to me..... it has been nothing short of miraculous and I treasure it.
I feel a special connection with the earth. I am intertwined with nature, plants, flowers, herbs, trees, shrubs and rocks in unique and wonderful ways. Animals gravitate towards me and I to them. We seem to have a special way of communicating that most do not understand. Although all animals are on my list of things to love and help, cats hold a special place deep within my soul. Hence the many many foster kitties, cats and felines in general that have blessed me with their presence. I attribute this to my day of birth. It is a unique fairly uncommon day and I feel extra blessed to have been gifted this day, so it's my job to do with it what I can.
The sheep... Here they came in a small moment of clarity, the first summer here on our new property. I must add.... it was LOVE at first sight. Learning the ins and outs of being a shepherdess, learning to communicate and care for my new charges was exhilarating and energy infusing. Not everything I wanted from having sheep has actually worked out, but one of the most important has. Through bringing up my sheep I have been blessed with new experiences, new knowledge, a greater understanding for farming and the raising of livestock. As well as learning to spin and weave the rugs I've always dreamed of, using wool from my very own herd. I adore my 6 little sheep that are currently sitting outside in my pasture awaiting the moment they hear me heading out for their evening feed ritual.
So this is where the spinning wheel comes in, a symbol of the old ways and historically treasured talents that our ancestors had when it came to creating their linens, clothes, robes, rugs and carpets. Here it is, a craft that not many seem to have or even want to have anymore. Yet I have discovered a small group of like minded people with lives similar to mine that also connect with the earth and animals and share their talents and gifts of spinning, weaving and wool processing. It is such an honor to know of these people in this very limited group of humans.
Woven in and out the spokes on the spinning wheel of the logo, sits the daisy. The herbs, flowers, berries, vegetables, flowers, trees and shrubs grown here are intertwined in our lives very deeply and have altered my life personally in unexplainable ways.. They help us be healthier, the plants, the grow boxes, the first little seedlings poking through the soft soil each spring warm our hearts, and bring such joy as they begin stretching up towards the heat of the sun.
Tending, protecting, watering, weeding, and spending time with them brings peace, comfort, and calm to our very beings. The earth has a way to heal our body, heart, mind and soul anytime we need it to. Grounding myself with the earth under my bare feet, pushing my fingers deep into the dirt and composts as I am planting, feeling the fruits and herbs when it's time to harvest has an incredibly soothing effect on me individually. I think it's more important to humans than anyone knows any more. I believe there are still so many secrets being held within the layers below our feet that goes largely unnoticed by most humans day after day. So, as a result the daisy is interwoven inside the spokes of the spinning wheel representing our love for the earth and all the things that grow here in, and how our lives, my life, absolutely depend on all of these things.
The name of our homestead and backyard hobby farm "Wild Daisy Homestead" is written in a whimsical type font as if its ready to tell a story as soon as the words are read. My hope is the logo as a whole will share the messages of our magical little place. I long for it to be inviting and in the end pleasing to those that come inside our world for a little peek.
The treatment and care of animals in a more gentle and compassionate way. Deductive reasoning in my mind tells us that, since we depend on the animals for nutrition, warmth and comforts, in return the animals care, comfort and treatment should be one of the human races highest priorities if we want to remain healthy and happy as God intended for us to be.
One of my goals is to share different ways that animal care on the farm can be improved, even for those not financially well off. If we have the love for animals and take our role as having dominion over them the way it was intended to be taken we can find ways of implementing kinder, gentler, and more comforting ways for all animals to live and be what God wanted them to be. Utilizing their abilities for our good and theirs. When we discover or learn something new, sharing it with others is the next step. How grateful I am for the gift of the internet, the creation of a way for everyone from the neighbors next door to our friends across the ocean, to immediately connect and converse with one another with the tap of a keyboard.
What better way can I get my message and my small ideas out into the world, than opening up my laptop and going to work? I hope everyone who reads this and has ideas will share them here in the comments with all of us. After all, "It's The Little Things" that make the biggest difference in our lives.
Thank you for becoming part of our dreams.
Wild Daisy Homestead.
