With the writer's permission, I'm sharing a question and my answer about what the teen and young adult percussion group will entail., and what the benefits of participation might be:
Q: What can we expect in the Teen and Young Adult Percussion Group?

A: The purpose of the group is to give older teens and young adults the opportunity to have a meeting place for social interaction, based on non-competitive, creative activity. Every participant in the group may engage as much or as little as is comfortable for them. We will experiment with rhythmic and melodic improvisation, using drums, hand-held percussion instruments, and xylophones. My hope is that participation in this type of group will result in increased self-confidence, better social skills, more impulse control, and even a decrease in anxiety and depression that comes from the support of others, and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with learning new skills.

Yes, this group is for people with a spectrum of abilities; individuals who are non-verbal are welcome, as are those with physical limitations (we can and will accommodate those differences), as are high-functioning individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Although there will be musical learning that takes place organically in this type of group, it is not a formal music education program, in which musical literacy and theory are expressly taught. In this program, the music is the therapy, and that is what will be the catalyst for growth and development.

So bottom line is: all are welcome, all are encouraged to participate at their own pace and comfort level, all will be included, and there is no pressure. My hope is that the group becomes a tightly bonded group of peers, and continues for as long as possible!

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and safe New Year! I will be closing for the holidays at 6 PM Wednesday, and shipping up to Boston for Christmas with our own family. I will be reopening on Wednesday, January 7 for our usual sessions. Remember that the deadline to register for our January 24 music therapy groups is January 5! Here is the calendar, and one of my favorite pictures of the season. ;) Merry Christmas! I appreciate every one of my families more than you know!
