❄️ Winter Driving Safety Reminder 🚗

As winter weather sets in, it’s a great time to prepare for safer driving and unexpected delays. A few simple steps can make your trips safer and less stressful all season long.

Winter Driving Tips:
• Slow down and increase following distance
• Clear snow and ice from all windows, mirrors, and lights before driving
• Keep your fuel tank at least half full
• Watch for black ice on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads
• Let someone know your route and expected arrival time

Build a Winter Emergency Kit for Your Vehicle:
• Blanket, gloves, hat, and extra warm clothing
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
• Phone charger or power bank
• Ice scraper, shovel, and jumper cables
• First-aid kit and emergency reflectors or flares

Taking a little time to prepare now can help keep you and your loved ones safe all winter. Drive carefully and stay warm!

🚰 Attention Kansas Well Owners!

The Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas is launching an exciting new program and they need your help! They’re working to sample as many private water wells as possible across the state to test for nitrates and a variety of other contaminants.

🧪 Parameters tested include:
• Nitrate
• Chloride
• Manganese
• Arsenic
• Selenium
• Uranium
• pH
…and more!

💧 Cost to you? Absolutely FREE.
All results are shared confidentially with participants, giving you valuable insight into your water quality with zero cost and complete privacy.

This is a fantastic opportunity for homeowners and a great way to better serve your constituents. Let’s help get this important program up and running and support safer water across Kansas!

If you have questions or concerns about breastfeeding, please reach out to your Clay County Health Department. Our Maternal & Child Health (MCH) nurses are here to provide education, support, and resources to help you feel confident and successful on your breastfeeding journey.

Dear breastfeeding mom,

Thank you.
Not because you’re perfect, not because you never doubt yourself, and not because the journey has been easy.
Thank you because you show up, even on the days your body is tired, your mind is overwhelmed, and your heart is carrying more than anyone can see.

Thank you for every latch attempt, every pump session you did half-asleep, every tear you wiped while wondering if you were doing “enough.”
Thank you for learning, unlearning, and trying again.
Thank you for feeding your baby with patience, with love, and with a type of devotion that deserves far more recognition than it gets.

Breastfeeding isn’t always magical.
Sometimes it’s work.
Sometimes it’s sacrifice.
Sometimes it’s lonely.
But you do it anyway, because you know it matters.

Whether today was full of ounces or minutes… whether feeding felt empowering or exhausting… whether you’re nursing at the breast, pumping, triple feeding, donating milk, or navigating challenges you never expected, thank you.

Your effort is seen.
Your love is felt.
Your baby is held, nourished, and comforted because of you.

You are doing something extraordinary.
You always have been.

🌙💛 Wrapping Up SIDS Awareness Month 💛🌙
As October comes to a close, let’s remember what this month is truly about—honoring every baby, supporting every family, and continuing to spread awareness all year long.

Throughout SIDS Awareness Month, we’ve shared ways to protect babies:
💙 Practice safe sleep every nap and night.
🚭 Keep homes smoke-free for healthy air.
💉 Stay up to date on vaccines for stronger protection.
🫶 Share knowledge and resources with caregivers, friends, and family.

📊 Because of ongoing awareness and education, SIDS rates have dropped by more than 50% since the 1990s—and with your help, we can keep improving those numbers.

Let’s keep working together to ensure every baby in our community sleeps safely and grows healthy and strong. 💕
