The Edible Garden

The Edible Garden The Edible Garden page is a place to share gardening, homesteading, permaculture and similar ideas. But it's ok if you are vegan, you can play here too!)

An edible garden, whether a tiny apartment balcony or half an acre in the country is a place to raise healthy, nutritious food, free of chemicals and genetically modified organisms. It's a way to save money at the grocery store as well as the doctor's office. As far as I"m concerned, if it's edible, it belongs here, whether animal or vegetable. (I firmly believe animals have their place in gardens, helping clean up spoils, left overs, and insects while providing meat, milk, eggs, hides, wool and various other by products.

I just want to take a moment to talk about “farmhouse dĂ©cor.” You know — the Pinterest boards full of bright white walls, shiplap, and perfectly placed vintage signs that say “Farm Fresh Eggs” even though the only eggs they’ve ever seen came from Kroger.

Let’s be honest
no actual farmhouse looks like that. None.

Real farmhouse dĂ©cor is not “minimalist chic.” It’s “maximum chaos.”

Our color palette? Dirt brown, mud gray, and whatever color the goats decided to rub against today. Forget those cute wicker baskets — ours are cracked feed buckets stacked next to the back door “because we might need them later.” The “farmhouse smell” everyone’s trying to recreate with candles? Yeah, that’s eau de barnyard with a hint of wet dog and hay dust.

You know that “farmhouse entryway bench” they always show in magazines? We’ve got one too — it’s covered in muddy boots, a pair of coveralls, and probably a half-used roll of vet wrap. Our coffee table centerpiece? A syringe cap, someone’s gloves, and maybe a jar of screws we found in the laundry.

I saw a post once that said, “A tidy home is a happy home.”
Well, ours must be ecstatic, because it’s too busy to ever be tidy.

We don’t decorate with “farmhouse signs.” We decorate with fly swatters, milk pails, and a collection of random buckets that have all become emotionally significant for some reason.

So yes, I love farmhouse dĂ©cor — I just happen to live in the unfiltered version. Muddy floors, buckets in the kitchen, hay in my hair, and all.

Because that’s the real “farmhouse aesthetic.”
