The Power of Affirmation: Creating the Life You've Always Wanted
Nearly all of us at some point has wanted and even tried to create a change in our lives. It might have been to start a new, healthier lifestyle, to quit smoking, or to improve an important relationship. But how is it that we turn thought into lasting, meaningful transformation? Turning wishful thinking into conscious reality ca
n happen in three easy steps.
THINK IT
Creating change starts with a thought called an affirmation, a positive statement given in the present moment, as if it were already true. An affirmation begins with the words I am and continues with the new reality you want for yourself. I am healthy. I am a nonsmoker. I am loved. I am happy.
While at first this affirmation may seem dishonest, you are setting into motion an intention that will later become reality. By creating this affirmation, you are focusing on your highest potential and concentrating positive energy on your eventual success. For example, if you create the affirmation, “I am healthy” your brain will start to think healthier, resulting in healthier lifestyle choices, and eventually a healthier you.
WRITE IT
Write your affirmation in a journal with a small list of easy-to-accomplish steps that will jump start your journey. State these steps in a way of what you want. For example, “When I feel the urge to smoke, I will take a brief walk instead.” Another helpful trick to stay on track with your progress is to write your affirmation on note cards and place them in locations where you will read them throughout the day. You could even set reminder messages on your phone and computer. These serve as great reminders of your intent and progress. Throughout your journey, it’s important to check in with your progress and your journal. When you do, reflect upon your initial journal entry. Then, write your affirmation again and a new set of easy-to-accomplish steps.
SAY IT
To secure success, say your intention out loud to yourself. By combining all three steps, you are sending the affirmation to both hemispheres of your brain, further shaping this new idea of yourself and turning wishful thinking into a conscious reality. To boost the effectiveness, say your affirmation to yourself in the mirror or make a commitment to say your affirmation to a supportive friend witnessing your journey.
By thinking it, writing it, and saying it, you can turn your thoughts into action and create the reality you want. On your journey, remember to be gentle with yourself. At first, creating change might prove to be difficult. Remember your affirmation. Think it. Say it. Write it. Be it. Reshaping your reality takes both time and patience, but the reward is a fully satisfying, conscious life.
Best wishes on your conscious journey forward.
