Very quietly at 0500 this morning, GCEMS celebrated our 18th birthday. For an agency that some nay-sayers predicted would not last 90 days, we collectively have achieved some significant milestones in our relatively short life together as a prehospital agency:

To date, we have made over 433,000 responses to calls for EMS assistance.

We currently make almost 42,000 responses per year.

Our current staff includes some of the best prehospital clinicians in New Jersey. Of our original 130 or so GCEMS staff members, 43 are still here, providing outstanding care to our patients. These patients recognize the outstanding, professional and empathetic care provided as the standard by which all other EMS agencies are judged. Our staff has grown to over 250 members.

Starting with our original 10 municipalities, we currently provide BLS service to 23 of 24 municipalities within the County of Gloucester. We respond from 19 strategically placed stations throughout our service area.

We proudly assembled 2 dedicated bariatric ambulances, ready for response around the clock. Every GCEMS response vehicle is equipped with a LUCAS CPR assist device.

GCEMS continues to embrace the expanding scope of practice for BLS providers and has been at the forefront of each new treatment modality as it has become available for our patients.

Our educational opportunities are second to none. Providers from throughout New Jersey travel hours to attend these unique classes.

If you were with us at 0500 on September 30 of 2007, or have come onboard since that date, your contributions and the outstanding patient care you provide is never taken for granted.

🚨 Big Day at Gloucester County EMS! 🚨
Today, our EMTs are sitting for the Civil Service promotional exam for Senior EMT — the next step in their professional growth and leadership journey. We are so proud of our team as they advance in their EMS careers! 💛💙
So what’s the difference between an EMT and a Senior EMT?
Here are a few key distinctions:
✅ Leadership & Oversight – Senior EMTs not only provide patient care, but also guide and mentor EMTs during calls and ensure policies are followed.
✅ Advanced Responsibility – While EMTs focus on direct emergency care, Senior EMTs take on supervisory tasks like coordinating crews, reviewing reports, and ensuring operational readiness.
✅ Decision-Making – Senior EMTs handle complex incidents, prioritize resources, and may act as the liaison between EMS crews, dispatch, and hospitals.
This promotion represents a major step forward in both clinical excellence and leadership within EMS. Congratulations to all of our EMTs taking this important step today — your dedication keeps Gloucester County strong! 💪🚑

🚑 On September 8, Gloucester County EMS partnered with SSH&E to conduct a simulated emergency response at ExxonMobil Paulsboro.
The exercise focused on a workplace emergency scenario and tested coordination, communication, and treatment protocols. Our EMTs worked side-by-side with site personnel to practice scene management and patient care in a safe, controlled setting.
A big thank you to Michelle and Alexa for representing GCEMS with professionalism, and to our partners at ExxonMobil Paulsboro for hosting this valuable drill. Training like this keeps our teams ready for real-world emergencies.

📚⚖️ Medical Legal & Ethics Day at the Academy

Recently, we had the privilege of welcoming our friend and local legal expert, Joe Remy, to the EMS Academy. Joe drew from his career as a lawyer and prosecutor—along with his years of EMS experience—to share valuable insight into the legal and ethical challenges faced in the field.

Students not only reviewed core legal concepts, but also worked through real case studies and explored the ethical considerations that shape EMS decision-making. Having Joe’s perspective added depth and real-world context that made the day especially impactful.

🚑👩‍⚕️ Pediatric Trauma Education at GCEMS 👨‍⚕️🚑

This week, Gloucester County EMS was proud to host Cooper University Health Care Medical Direction for a CEU session focused on pediatric trauma.

As always, classes were free, and open to all.

To make sure every provider had access, we offered sessions for both day and night shift crews—because learning never stops when you serve a 24/7 community.

Thank you to Cooper’s team for bringing their expertise, and to our EMTs and paramedics for continuing to invest in their professional growth. Together, we’re making sure Gloucester County’s youngest patients get the care they deserve. 💙

📍Both classes were held live, in person, at the GCEMS Training Academy.

Who Responds When You Call 911?

When you dial 911 in Gloucester County, the first faces you’ll see are Gloucester County EMS EMTs—the front-line, lifesaving providers who staff our ambulances and Quick Response Vehicles (QRVs).

What EMTs do (Basic Life Support):
🚑Rapid patient assessment
🚑CPR & defibrillation (AED)
🚑Oxygen therapy & airway management
🚑Bleeding control, splinting, and immobilization
🚑Administration of critical medications such as epinephrine, naloxone, aspirin, and albuterol

What Paramedics do (Advanced Life Support):
🏥Advanced airways
🏥Cardiac monitoring
🏥IV/IO access and advanced medications

💡 Many of our EMTs also hold advanced licenses as paramedics or nurses—but when they wear the GCEMS patch, they deliver Basic Life Support care. Paramedic units are dispatched separately, only when advanced interventions are needed.
Every call starts with an EMT. Every life saved begins with their skill, speed, and compassion. 💙
