“I don’t know.”

Not something many healthcare providers are trained to say.

We’re taught to have the answer. To be certain. To project confidence.

But real life, and real health, is often more nuanced than that.

At McDaniel Nutrition Therapy, we believe humility and curiosity are not weaknesses. They’re part of what makes great care possible.

Because saying “I don’t know” doesn’t mean stopping there.
It means asking better questions.
Looking deeper.
Staying engaged in the process with you.
It means being willing to sit in the space between question and answer and working together to find what’s right for your body.

There is something powerful about that kind of partnership.
Competence isn’t about knowing everything.
It’s about knowing how to keep learning.

And sometimes, the most honest place to start is here.

Listening, learning, and growing!

Our team of dietitians is tuning into with Zoë Bisbing’s latest seminar: “Protecting Kids’ Body Image in Aesthetic Sports.”
One message that really resonated: bring your values to life in tangible ways.
Zoë shared that something as simple as displaying body diversity in your home: books, art, conversations, can make a powerful impact. Not just for your own kids, but for any child (or adult) who walks through your door. It creates a space that feels safe, inclusive, and welcoming.
Even more importantly, it helps:
→ Challenge the status quo
→ Support critical thinking
→ Spark organic, everyday conversations about bodies, worth, and identity
Because the environments we create quietly shape the beliefs our kids (and we) carry. ❤️

What happens when the noise goes away?
No podcasts. No scrolling. No constant input.
Just quiet.

For many, that idea feels uncomfortable, but it can also be where clarity begins.

At McDaniel Nutrition Therapy, we often focus on how to nourish the body. But true health also requires space to think, process, and reconnect with internal cues that are easy to miss in a busy, always-on world.

The good news? That kind of reset doesn’t require a full silent retreat.

It can start with small moments:
• a walk without your phone
• a few quiet minutes before the day begins
• eating a meal without distraction

These pauses can shift how you feel, think, and even how you show up for your health.
Jen has shared more reflections on the impact of stepping away from noise, and what it revealed, in her Substack.

And for those who feel called to go deeper, she’ll be hosting an upcoming silent retreat.

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about popular supplement called Seed.

Seed is a synbiotic (probiotic + prebiotic), and there are a few things I genuinely like:

A gentler prebiotic that may be better tolerated for IBS
A solid delivery system
Use of researched bacterial strains

But it’s good to know…

Most of the research is on individual strains; not the exact product as a whole. And when it comes to probiotics, we’re still learning which strains work best for which people.

Your gut microbiome is highly personalized. What works for one person may do nothing for another. Check out Clinical Guide to Probiotic Chart: https://usprobioticguide.com/?utm_source=intro_pg&utm_medium=civ&utm_campaign=USA_CHART

And while supplements can be helpful in certain situations, they don’t replace the foundations:
🫘Fiber
🥗Plant diversity
🍜Fermented foods

That’s where the biggest impact happens: especially for IBS.

Our bottom line: Supplements like Seed can be a helpful tool when used alongside solid gut health habits—but they’re not necessary, and they’re not magic.

If you’re considering one, make sure it fits your symptoms, your tolerance, and your overall nutrition strategy (and your budget!!)

Jen is joined by Jo Pang, certified forest therapy guide and co-founder of Kindred Forest , for a conversation that gently invites us back into connection: with nature, with our bodies, and with ourselves.

Together, they explore what becomes possible when we step outside of fast-paced, productivity-driven living… and into a more grounded, aligned way of being—where self-care becomes less reactive and more integrated into everyday life.
From forest bathing to silent retreats, Jo shares how intentional time in nature and stillness can:
• support nervous system regulation
• deepen self-awareness
• reconnect us to a sense of wonder

This episode is a reminder that even small moments of presence, whether outside or within your own home, can meaningfully shift your well-being and your relationship with the world around you.

✨ This is also the beautiful space where Jen will be hosting her upcoming Silent Retreat at Kindred Forest.

70% of people with IBS never talk about their symptoms with a doctor or dietitian.

So they’re left managing discomfort, food fears, and frustration, on their own.

We’re resharing this for IBS Awareness Month where Jen breaks down 3 things she focuses on with clients:

1️⃣ Understand the gut–brain connection
IBS isn’t just about food. Stress, anxiety, and your nervous system can directly impact digestion and symptoms.

2️⃣ Focus on the right types of fiber
It’s not about avoiding fiber—it’s about choosing the right kind. Many people with IBS do better with more soluble fiber to support digestion without worsening symptoms.

3️⃣ Speak up about what’s “normal”
Bloating, pain, and unpredictable digestion shouldn’t be something you just live with. Getting clarity on what’s normal (and what’s not) is a key step toward feeling better.

If you’ve been trying to figure this out on your own, we are here to support you!

April is IBS Awareness Month and Jen is diving into one of the most overwhelming (and often misunderstood) parts of gut health: supplements.

As a gut health dietitian, she sees firsthand how IBS impacts more than digestion, it shapes how people eat, travel, socialize, and feel in their own bodies. And while supplements can play a role, they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution.

In her latest Substack, Jen breaks it down:
✨ Why IBS is a real, diagnosable condition, not “just in your head”
✨ How to think about supplements by symptom (not hype)
✨ The truth about digestive enzymes, peppermint oil, fiber, and probiotics
✨ And most importantly: how to use these tools intentionally

Because the goal isn’t a cabinet full of pills, it’s helping people live their lives with more freedom!

Bloating is common, but that doesn’t mean it’s something you have to ignore.

If it’s happening often, worsening throughout the day, or affecting how you eat, it’s worth understanding what’s behind it.

Bloating can be linked to IBS, food sensitivities, or how your digestive system is functioning. The good news: there are evidence-based ways to address it.

At McDaniel Nutrition Therapy, we take a personalized approach to identify what’s driving your symptoms.

Our dietitians are trained in the low FODMAP approach through Monash University, the gold standard for managing IBS and digestive concerns.

Spring is here… and for a lot of us, so is body image noise.
More skin. More comparison. More self-judgment.

In this week’s episode, Jen explores why this season can quietly stir up body image thoughts and feelings and curiosity around, could we meet them differently?

✨ She discusses:
• Why body image struggles aren’t a personal issue.
• The difference between your experience vs. your thoughts about it
• How clothing, social media, and seasons shape self-perception
• A gentler shift from appearance → function

Think of this as spring cleaning… for your mindset!

What is the FODMAP protocol & why might it matter for IBS?
FODMAPs are fermentable carbohydrates that can trigger bloating, gas, and digestive discomfort in some people.

The Low FODMAP approach isn’t meant to be a long-term diet, it’s a short-term protocol used to identify your personal triggers so you can feel your best.

At McDaniel Nutrition Therapy, Low FODMAP support is led by a dietitian trained through Monash University, with our team collaborating to ensure care is personalized, practical, and sustainable.

Not everyone needs this approach, and the goal isn’t restriction, it’s clarity, confidence, and long-term flexibility with food.

If you’re wondering whether this approach is right for you, we’re here to help you figure out your next best step.

At McDaniel Nutrition Therapy, we get the appeal of supplements.

The idea that you could add one thing and feel better, sleep better, have more energy… it’s incredibly tempting. And honestly, it’s something we’ve done ourselves.

But here’s what we keep coming back to:
✨ Most of us don’t need more supplements
✨ We can benefit with consistency from the basics

Are supplements ever helpful? Absolutely.
But they’re the support act, not the headliner.

Before adding something new, Jen offers a series of questions to consider like:
👉 What am I actually hoping this will fix?
👉 Is there something more foundational being skipped?

She wrote more about this (including what supplements might be worth considering + what tends to miss the mark) in this week’s Substack.

If you’ve ever felt pulled into the “this might be the thing” cycle… this one’s for you.
