I have been getting a lot of questions from patients, friends, and family members about how to talk to young children about the Coronavirus in order to lower their anxiety. The most important thing to remember is that children’s anxiety rises if they do not comprehend the information given to them. Every day, children are faced with information about COVID-19 in language they cannot understand, which can be confusing. Therefore, we need to make sure we present them with factual information about this situation in developmentally-appropriate language. Keeping information from them “to protect them” would not be the ideal strategy right now, especially since they know something is not right.
Given the importance of providing children with information, I wanted to offer parents one example of how to explain COVID-19 to young children under the age of 7 years:
“Coronavirus fights the good soldiers we have in our bodies that fight sickness. We have to make sure we keep our soldiers strong and healthy by eating lots of fruit and veggies and washing our hands. Kids like you have very strong soldiers who can fight the Coronavirus. Some people don’t have strong soldiers and that’s why we have to stay home so those people don’t get the Coronavirus.”
Make sure you correct any misconceptions your child might have, for example, that Coronavirus can be in the water they drink. Also, make sure you answer any questions they have about it honestly. For example, if they’re concerned about parents or grandparents, be honest about their loved ones’ “soldiers’ strength.” I.e. “Grandma’s soldiers are not very strong, but she’s doing a lot of things to help them be strong. She eats healthy, stays home, and washes her hands.”
Make sure you give your children a break from the flood of COVID-19 information from TV or adult conversations. When you do talk about the Coronavirus or hear something on TV in your kids’ presence, make sure to explain it to them in simple language.
