A note from a special Wings Over Texas Hospice volunteer. β€οΈπ€π
I was very nervous about volunteering but my first visits were with the lady who recruited me. She let me sit in while she visited with the patients, which helped because I had an easy introduction to the process.
Volunteering makes me feel like I am doing something useful for the patients and the family. Even if the patients are not really actively aware of my being with them, I feel they get comfort from my presence and my voice. I feel a calmness is in the room when I pray with a patient. Even if the patient is not actively aware of my prayer it just feels better. It is hard to explain but it is soothing to sit with someone and just be with them.
There is a spiritual aspect to being a volunteer for hospice. Not because of what I actively do but because it feels like the patient is calmer, maybe less afraid or alone, and that, in turn, gives me a feeling that I have done something positive.
If I were talking to a potential recruit, I would say that there are studies about the negative impact loneliness is having on our society. The effect of loneliness when you are dying has to be devastating. If we can ease one person through loneliness and fear of death it would be like a gift, to the patient and to us.
