💙 Your Rights When Choosing Hospice 💙
Week 1: Your Right To Choose Hopice Care

Many families believe hospice is something a doctor or hospital decides.
The truth? Hospice care is always a choice.

Patients and families have the right to decide if and when hospice begins, which provider they choose, and even change their mind if their goals of care change.

Swipe to learn more about your right to choose hospice care.

Conversations about aging aren’t always easy. 🤍

Families face hard decisions.
Healthcare teams face complex ethical questions.
And every situation deserves wisdom, compassion, and thoughtful care. 🩺

That’s why events like the Ethical Issues in Aging Symposium hosted by the Tarrant Area Gerontological Society (TAGS) are so important for our healthcare community.

Grand Hospice is honored to be one of the sponsors supporting this meaningful day of learning, collaboration, and conversation among professionals who care deeply about serving older adults with dignity.

When those who share the same heart for patients come together to learn from one another, it strengthens the care our entire community receives.

We’re grateful to support this event and thankful for everyone who continues showing up for our aging neighbors and their families.

Because behind every ethical conversation is a person who deserves compassion, respect, and the very best care.

You often hear us say it is a blessing to serve our community, but when families share that our care brought peace, comfort, and support during such a tender time, it reminds us that the blessing goes both ways.

Thank you for allowing Grand Hospice to be part of your family’s story. It is truly an honor. 💙

This week, Mariela Heffel-Martella, Co-Founder and Patient Advocate with Grand Hospice, attended a Dementia Friendly Fort Worth community event where she served as a Spanish interpreter for a Spanish-speaking participant living with dementia.

By providing interpretation throughout the event, Mariela helped ensure he could understand the activities, engage in conversations, and be part of the experience alongside everyone else. Language should never be a barrier to inclusion, dignity, or community.

At Grand Hospice, we believe compassionate care extends beyond the bedside and into the communities we serve. We are grateful for organizations like Dementia Friendly Fort Worth that are creating spaces where every person feels welcomed, understood, and valued. 💙

🩺 Did you know you have rights when it comes to hospice care?

Many families don’t realize they have a choice when it comes to hospice. In fact, Medicare and most insurance plans protect several important rights for patients and their families.

🤍 You Have the Right to Choose Your Hospice Provider

A hospital, facility, or physician may recommend a hospice, but the final decision always belongs to you and your family.

🤍 You Have the Right to Clear Information About Your Care

You should understand your hospice options, your plan of care, and the services that will be provided.

🤍 You Have the Right to Be Treated With Dignity and Respect

Hospice care should honor your values, beliefs, and the life story of the person you love.

🤍 You Have the Right to Ask Questions and Be Part of Decisions

Hospice care is a team approach, and patients and families are an important part of that team.

🤍 You Have the Right to Change Hospice Providers

If your needs are not being met, you have the right to choose a different hospice provider.

No family should feel rushed, confused, or unsupported during one of the most important seasons of life.

At Grand Hospice, we believe hospice care should feel personal. Our team is committed to answering the phone, educating families, and walking alongside you with compassion every step of the way.

If you or someone you love may be approaching the need for hospice, we are always here to talk and help you understand your options.

You deserve to feel informed, supported, and cared for.

We’re grateful for the way our Co-Founder and Patient Advocate, Mariela, continues to pour into the professional community that serves our seniors.

Tonight she’s attending the Tarrant Area Gerontological Society networking event and generously donated a beautiful Spring themed raffle basket to support their work.

At Grand Hospice, we believe strong relationships lead to stronger care. Investing in organizations like TAGS helps foster collaboration among providers who are committed to serving older adults and their families with dignity and excellence.

If you’re there tonight, be sure to connect with Mariela, and check out the raffle table. 💙

🩺 When Is Hospice Appropriate?
COPD (Advanced Lung Disease) Spotlight 💙

COPD does not change overnight. It is a gradual progression that often brings more hospital visits, more oxygen, and more exhaustion for both patients and the people who love them.

Many families are told to keep pushing forward without ever being told that an extra layer of support is available.

Hospice becomes appropriate when the focus shifts from trying to fix the lungs to protecting comfort, conserving energy, and helping every breath feel more manageable.

This week we are highlighting 5 common signs that it may be time to have the hospice conversation:

• Shortness of breath, even at rest
• Frequent ER visits or hospitalizations
• Increasing oxygen needs
• Severe fatigue with simple activities
• Unintentional weight loss and weakness

Hospice care for COPD is about breathing easier, staying home comfortably, and surrounding both the patient and their loved ones with consistent, compassionate support.

When the question of “what comes next?” begins to surface, you do not have to navigate it alone. We are here in real time, with real support.

Dzenana spent time at Alvarado Meadows yesterday turning a simple afternoon into something special with a hands-on mini pizza activity for the residents 🍕

This is what being present in our community looks like. Thank you, Dzenana, for making every visit meaningful. 💙

We are deeply grateful to T. Shubin for the beautiful and heartfelt words she shared as she honored her father’s life.

Your courage, your love for your dad, and the way you allowed us to be part of such a sacred season is something we will never take lightly. Thank you for trusting our team, for allowing us to walk beside your family, and for speaking so openly about your experience. Your words are a gift to us and to the families who will come after you.

It is always our prayer that every patient is cared for with dignity and peace, and that every family feels supported, prepared, and never alone. Hearing how your father’s journey impacted you reminds us why we do this work each day.

Thank you for letting us be part of David’s story and for allowing us to continue sharing his legacy through your voice.

With love and gratitude,
Grand Hospice 💙
