Imbibition
the process by which spinal discs absorb fluids, oxygen, and nutrients from their surrounding structures. Unlike many tissues, discs do not have a direct blood supply, so they rely on movement and pressure changes to stay healthy.
How it relates to chiropractic care
When the spine moves properly, it creates a pumping or sponge-like effect in the discs
This allows discs to imbibe (soak up) nutrients and release waste products
Restrictions or misalignments can reduce normal motion, which may decrease imbibition.
Why adjustments matter
Chiropractic adjustments aim to:
Restore normal joint motion
Reduce abnormal pressure on discs
Improve the mechanical environment needed for effective imbibition
With better motion, discs can rehydrate and maintain their height and resilience, which supports overall spinal health.
Simple analogy
Think of a disc like a sponge:
Movement = squeezing and releasing the sponge.
That action allows fresh fluid in and old fluid out.
Without movement, the sponge dries out
This concept is often discussed in chiropractic when talking about disc health, degeneration, posture, and the importance of regular movement and adjustments.
