Geeta Iyengar often taught rocking and rolling motion to help improve our freedom in twists and forward bends. Here Karen enjoys the controlled momentum and ease of these gently swinging movements, preparing her for the final Head of the Knee Pose.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Calm the mind through exhalation
• In Yoga Sutra I.34, the sage Patanjali describes one of several techniques for establishing a serene and benevolent state of consciousness.
• To quiet the mind, we can observe and extend the pensive state experienced at the end of a soft and steady exhalation.
• With practice, we can learn to pause before inhaling again, passively remaining in a state of tranquility.
• B.K.S. Iyengar writes that this practice ensures a state of consciousness which is like a calm lake.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Choose One Pose as a Reference for the Entire Practice
• Select a basic pose that you are comfortable with, such as Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose), Trikonasana (Triangle Pose), or a seated twist.
• Whatever posture you do, follow it with the reference pose.
• Observe how the reference pose changes as you move through your practice.
• The body will naturally become more mobile, but see if you can notice subtle aspects of the pose.
• Learn to observe the specific effects of other poses on your reference pose.

She will guide you through a series of poses to increase stability and spaciousness in the lower back as you traction the lumbar spine, strengthen the abdominal and spinal muscles, and restore balance to your pelvis and hips. All students who sign up for the class will have two weeks of online access to the recording, so you can take – and retake – as often as you’d like! Amy displays both strength and lightness in this arm balance, the Eight Bends Pose. The strong closing of the knees around the arm helps make the pose stable.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Concentrate on one action
• Create a sequence of 3 - 5 poses that have a common action for your practice of concentration.
• For example, you could focus on pressing your heels strongly down into the floor in a series of standing poses.
• Keep your mind on this single action and observe the various effects or outcomes of the action.
• Observe how your ease and familiarity with the action improves as you move through your sequence. As Geeta Iyengar said, it "becomes known to you."
• Concentration, or dharana, is the sixth limb of yoga, and is considered a pre-requisite for the experience of deeper meditative states of awareness.
