Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Do daily reading about yoga philosophy
• Students of Iyengar Yoga are extremely fortunate that B.K.S. Iyengar was a prolific writer. He has left many books, articles and transcripts of talks for us to study.
• Select a book and commit to a few minutes of reading each day. Try doing your reading in the morning and see how it effects your asana practice and your day.
• A small amount of reading and reflection can have a big influence. A few pages of attentive reading are enough to nurture reflection about how you are practicing, and the meaning of yoga in your life.
• If you are new to philosophy studies, start with one of the more accessible books such as Light on Life or The Tree of Yoga.

Sun salutes help develop strength and mobility while generating heat. They can become a practice in themselves, and are also a good preparation for standing poses, backbends or arm balances.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Reflect on how to relate to others
• In Yoga Sutra I:33, the sage Patanjali describes how we should interact with others.
• We should be friendly toward those who are happy, compassionate toward those who are suffering, rejoice when we see virtue in others, and be non-reactive when we see vice.
• Practicing these qualities leads to citta prasadanam, a graceful diffusion of consciousness.
• Study Light on Life page 94 where B.K.S. Iyengar describes these four healthy movements of the mind.

Rolling from a Plough pose variation to a forward extension is fun and can be done with many repetitions as the range of motion gradually increases. Here Karen is enjoying the controlled momentum of the pose, striving to make it as smooth as possible.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Pay Attention to your Hands
• Throughout your practice, pay attention to what your hands are doing.
• With arms overhead or out to the side, open your palms and spread your fingers out wide. Observe how this affects the stretch of the arms.
• Now see if you can let the fingers touch all touch each other, but still keep the palms wide. Notice how this more refined action changes your experience of your arms.
• When you place the hands on the floor as in Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose), press all the fingers, the finger mounds and the palms evenly. How does this affect your arms and shoulders?

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Practice with awareness of your skin
• Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Moving with awareness of the skin brings sensitivity and lightness to your postures.
• Stretch your arms out to the side and lengthen the arms further by moving from the skin. Let your breath move into the skin of the breastbone and side ribs.
• Now do a familiar pose such as Triangle Pose. Stretch your limbs and soften your breath while focusing on skin awareness.
• B.K.S. Iyengar writes that the skin is associated with the air element. We feel the touch of the wind on
