Jolie "fell in love with the gentle moves and challenges" that come with this practice, and works to "create a space that fosters appreciation for where you are at, while offering some challenges to deepen one's practice "...

This is just one of the exciting changes we have coming this spring >>> stay tuned!

Keep practicing!

Yesterday, before practice, I went to the coffee stand and was having a muffin and a coffee ๐Ÿง โ˜•

Another Yogi saw me and came to say hello, only to audibly *gasp* "Ashley! Are you eating before your practice?!"

Sheepishly ๐Ÿ‘ I explained, normally no I do not eat before practice, but I practice relatively soon after waking up back home. Here in Mysore we wake up early and wait for HOURS before getting on our mats. I simply cannot get up at 5am and wait until 9am to practice, and then *practice* without having a little something (for the record, I hardly think a tiny muffin counts as breaking your fast -and I had nearly 2 more hours to digest)... She just shrugged ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

As I reflected on this brief exchange, it made me think of other times I've felt judged in the Ashtanga community -and how many times I've judged others, or for that matter, judged myself. There seems to be an endless amount of guidelines, enough that you could critique each person for something if you wanted to. Do we want to? Aren't we all practicing for different reasons? And after all, the word "practice" implies that it's never perfect and never finished.

I love the Ashtanga structure when applied intelligently and with a purpose. If we follow rules blindly we only end up losing our sense of self. This practice is meant to bring us closer to our inner awareness, not closer to becoming an Ashtanga Robot ๐Ÿค–

Do what makes sense in each moment ๐Ÿ•‰๏ธ

Gratitude is a choice ๐Ÿค
Everyday we experience stress, and everyday we choose how to react. Most times, non-reaction is the fastest way back to a place of love and gratitude. Finding grace in the hard places is the whole point of the yoga practice. Creating space within for gratitude in between emotions and reactions.
Cowboy emoji just for fun because it came up automatically lol -but perhaps the universe is suggesting we unleash our inner pioneer, and find new territory on this gratitude quest.....

"Yoga is not movement based in aesthetics. Yoga is movement based in inner awareness" ~Kino

Though we enjoy the challenge and reward of making shapes, the real journey is within, on the inner landscape. This is often more challenging than getting one's leg behind the head!

Grateful to have the chance to learn more about myself and my practice with at ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒž grateful for these three beauties as well: -what an awesome week of deepening our awareness, our friendships, and of course, our hips! ๐Ÿ˜œ

Foundation

If I'm honest, I haven't felt truly grounded since 2019. I spent the last 2 years blaming external forces for this: I moved 3 times, had neighbor drama, changed jobs twice, family dynamics changed, I got divorced, worked thru covid as a nurse... and I felt existentially LOST.

I finally realized that it was me, giving power to all this s**t, that kept bringing it back to the surface. I had some of the best days of my life in the last 2 years, and yet I kept dragging myself back into stressful, whacky situations! It seemed all I could talk about some days, and I couldn't fathom sometimes the amount of nonsense and perpetual changes that I was experiencing. That paradox has been hard to balance on, because I do feel like I lead with my heart, and I often find myself at the end of my own sword.

2021 has taught me the importance of being one's own foundation. And I don't mean like "grounding". I mean, finding the anchor within yourself so as to not rely on external factors to feel stable and content.

We need to be our own best friends. We need to be able to hold space for ourselves and find the space within that provides comfort and steadiness.

After all, isn't that yoga?
