We asked University Hospitals Recruiter, Christie H., “What is the best career advice you’ve ever received? "Do something you're passionate about as a career. They say when you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. I believe that."

And what does Christie think is the best way for an applicant’s resume to stand out?
"Keep it clear and concise, where dates of employment and other important information stand out." Experience a career you’ll really love at University Hospitals. https://tinyurl.com/4jxz6sxt

Honoring Our Legacy, Celebrating Our Future: Perioperative Nurses Week. In 1931, Chief of Surgery Dr. Elliott Cutler and cardiac surgeon Dr. Claude Beck performed the very first operation at the new Lakeside Hospital—a monumental moment in University Hospitals’ history.

As we reflect on this historic photo, we’re reminded of how far we’ve come. From that pioneering procedure to today’s state-of-the-art surgical suites, our progress has been guided by innovation, compassion, and the unwavering dedication of our perioperative nurses.

This week, we celebrate the skilled nurses who stand at the heart of every surgery—caring for patients before, during, and after their procedures. Their expertise ensures safe, seamless experiences for every patient, every day.

From UH Cleveland Medical Center to UH Geauga Medical Center and throughout Northeast Ohio, we are proud of our perioperative teams who carry forward the same spirit of excellence that began nearly a century ago.

Thank you to our perioperative nurses for continuing the legacy of care that began in 1931. You are the backbone of surgical excellence at UH.

We’re proud to celebrate Perioperative Nurses Week and honor the incredible impact our perioperative nurses have on our patients — before, during, and after surgery. We’re proud to honor and celebrate the extraordinary individuals who have served our country—protecting our freedom and safety with courage and sacrifice. They have left a lasting legacy on our nation and continue to inspire our communities every day.

We’re especially grateful for the veterans who have chosen to extend their impactful mission through a career with University Hospitals. Cindy F. is a veteran who is also a Nurse Manager at UH Cleveland Medical Center (CMC).

Cindy started working at UH in June 2019 for many reasons. “They were extremely nurse-friendly, they are a Magnet® hospital, and their culture was very pro-nursing,” recalls Cindy. “They also have amazing military benefits and support. This was very important to me as I was still actively in the Army Reserves.”

In fact, when Cindy went on military leave in 2020, she was the commander of the 948th FRST in Afghanistan, supporting the special forces and rangers. When she returned home, she started working back at CMC in late 2021 as a Clinical Nurse Educator.

In 2023, she became the interim Nurse Manager for the Trauma ICU and later for the Trauma Med-Surg floor. In 2024, she accepted the full-time Trauma Med-Surg Nurse Manager position.

Throughout her time with UH, her experience has been very positive. “I have gotten the pleasure to work with some amazing professionals here,” says Cindy. “UH was extremely supportive while I was still serving, and the community that I had here remained present even while I was deployed.”

If you’d like to experience this same level of respect and support in your career, come to University Hospitals. https://tinyurl.com/59mtvhds

November is Native American Heritage Month. This is a time for us to recognize the culture, traditions, and important contributions of Native Americans and Alaska Natives. We’re particularly proud to honor our very own April B., Medical Assistant II, UH Pediatric Primary Care.

With Navajo, Algonquin, and Mohawk tribal affiliations, April has been immersed in Native American traditions her whole life, mostly through the inspiration of her mother. “She taught me about all of our Navajo traditions,” April recalls. “More than that, she taught me to be strong and resilient and that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to.”

April put her mother’s advice into practice when she joined University Hospitals as a medical assistant in 2016. Since joining us, April has experienced a truly rewarding career at University Hospitals. April says, “I love interacting with people from different cultures. It’s more than just getting to know them as a patient, but as a person, too. I enjoy learning how different cultures approach medical care, their traditional healing practices, or specific medical necessities based on cultural beliefs and customs.”

Throughout her time with us, April has continually sought opportunities to grow and advance in her career, and we’ve been proud to support that growth. “The growth I have experienced here has been very exciting,” April says. “Through it all, I was supported by supervisors and coworkers, including those outside my department.”

April encourages others to come and grow their careers at University Hospitals. “I would recommend looking into UH to start your career or further your career,” April advises. “UH stands by their motto to heal, to teach, to discover. It is very reassuring to know that your employer wants you to become the best version of yourself.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center is proud to have been part of the Crucial Catch: Intercept Cancer Game between the Cleveland Browns and the Miami Dolphins at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland. We partnered with the Browns, the NFL and the American Cancer Society to celebrate survivorship and raise awareness about the importance of cancer screenings for early cancer detection. The annual event is devoted to honoring the journeys of survivors, celebrating the dedication of caregivers, and remembering those whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Before the game even began, one huge victory was enthusiastically celebrated. This was when Mary Jo Mazzarella, a triple-negative stage IV metastatic breast cancer survivor, rang the cancer survivor bell surrounded by family near the end zone. “When I rang that bell, I thought of every UH doctor, nurse, and therapist who stood by me,” said Mary Jo. “I also thought of the people still fighting. This moment wasn’t just for me — it was for all of us. I’m so grateful to UH for helping me get here, and to the Browns for making this day so special.”

Venoy Rogers, a colorectal cancer survivor also treated at UH, served as a Coin Toss Captain, flanked by Browns players Joel Bitonio, Denzel Ward, Rayshawn Jenkins and Myles Garrett. “A diagnosis changes your life,” said Venoy. “But being out there on the field, surrounded by survivors and supporters, reminded me how strong we are together.”

As part of this important event, fans wrote names of loved ones to create “In Honor Of” posters. Volunteers also distributed pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness and information booths provided prevention and early detection education.

The game was also a success for the Browns as they prevailed over the Dolphins 31-6!

During National Pharmacy Week, we’re proud to recognize and honor the incredible contributions our pharmacists and pharmacy technicians make to the health of our patients. We’re also excited to support their important work with the most advanced technology around.

Last year, we introduced Pill-nelope, a robotic delivery device that enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of our licensed pharmacy technicians by automating the delivery of medication to the UH CMC Emergency Department. Since coming online, Pill-nelope has dedicated 823 hours to transporting medication, traveling more than 1,600 miles between the main pharmacy at UH Seidman Medical Center, the CMC sub-basement pharmacy and the ED. Before Pill-nelope, a pharmacy technician would have to make a 20-minute round trip to bring medications to the ED every hour. Thanks to Pill-nelope, our pharmacy technicians have an additional two and a half hours in their day to devote to preparing medications for our patients.

“These robots dramatically improve our workflow efficiency, and more importantly, empower us to further improve patient care by reducing wait time,” said Robert Andrukat, R.Ph., PharmD, BCPS, Manager UH Cleveland Medical Center Pharmacy Services.

Now Pill-nelope has a new friend – MedWard. Thanks to MedWard, our Pharmacy team can expand delivery service to include all inpatient floors on Lakeside. Each robot can hold medications for multiple patients, including high-volume items like 5-liter fluid bags, adding to their efficiency.

“Being able to extend our robotic delivery service to the inpatient floors greatly improves the productivity of our pharmacy technicians, enabling them to work to the top of their license instead of just being human couriers,” said Michael Carlin, R.Ph., MBA, Vice President Hospital Operations.

If you’d like to work at the leading edge of pharmacy practice, we invite you to join us. https://tinyurl.com/mr4cptz5

It’s Medical Assistants Week! We’re grateful for the compassion, dedication and skill our Medical Assistants bring to our patients every day. From front office coordination to hands-on patient care, they play a critical role in making our exceptional patient experiences possible. And we’re proud to support the career growth and development of our Medical Assistants – like Whitny G.

While working at University Hospitals in a front desk role, Whitny participated in UH’s “Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program” and became a Certified Medical Assistant. As Whitny explains, “This program is really great for those seeking to advance in their careers, but don’t have the means financially, and who still need to work while going to school. “It’s local, it’s hands-on and more.”

Whitny has been a Medical Assistant at UH for a year now and was quickly promoted to Medical Assistant II. Whitny is proud to say, “I’m now the ‘Go to’ or lead Medical Assistant in our office. I came to UH seeking a career, seeking to improve myself, and that’s exactly what I’ve done.”

What does Whitny love most about her new life as a Medical Assistant? “I love engaging with the patients one-on-one. To connect with them in the office and ultimately help them while they are there is something special. Seeing the smile on their faces and knowing they are truly satisfied is very gratifying.”
