February is Black History Month, and we’re grateful for the vital contributions made by Black Americans in the healthcare field. Here at UH, Brian G., Assistant Nurse Manager, UH Cleveland Medical Center, plays a key role in encouraging, supporting and empowering other nurses of color as a leader within our Nurses of Color Employee Resource Group.
Brian joined the Nurses of Color ERG, open to all employees, because of its inclusivity of African American nurses and the opportunities it gave him to network and form relationships with a diverse nurse population. The ERG was formed to optimize professional growth, workforce engagement, and community trust, while advancing nursing diversity and equity at University Hospitals.
Brian enjoys the impact he can make through the ERG. As Brian notes, “Nurses of the ERG volunteer at local UH Community Wellness events, serve at a variety of charities, participate in the Future Shades of Medicine, mentor UH employees who want to become nurses and collaborate with nurse leadership regarding the advancement of nursing at UH.”
When it comes to his own advancement as a nurse, Brian looks to his family for inspiration. Brian says, “My parents and two aunts inspire me to be a professional, caring, empathetic, and conscientious nurse. They instilled in me the commitment to ‘Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you.’ This is how I’ve lived as a bedside nurse and nurse leader.”
At University Hospitals, we’re proud to support Brian’s career journey and progression. “Since I started as a UH employee in 2011, every manager has supported me and my vision,” says Brian. “Also, the tuition reimbursement at UH is great! I’ve used it gain my LPN, AA, BSN, MSN and MBA! I encourage people to bring their careers to University Hospitals for the culture, collaboration, educational opportunities and professional development. UH is a healthcare system that EMPOWERS!” Find out for yourself by exploring our openings and applying today. https://tinyurl.com/3rsdbzrd
