Every year millions of dollars are spent by pharmaceutical companies to develop and test drugs using in vitro models of the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB). Flocel Inc has invented a practical in vitro model that more accurately reflects the BBB characteristics. Flocel has provided several innovative products with its DIV-BBB technology that are helping researchers in their in vitro studies in the United States and Europe.The Flocel apparatus consists of hollow fibers (the artificial blood vessels) that are surrounded by an extracapillary space (the brain side). In addition to the cerebrovascular system, this apparatus can also be used to mimic the bone marrow, the placental barrier, or the CSF-blood barrier. In the case of modeling of bone marrow, the abluminal space is an ideal environment for the growth and differentiation of stem cells. provides in vitro BBB permeability testing on a contract basis. The fee structure is set by the number of compounds to be tested and the complexity of the testing. We have performed tests for several pharmaceutical and Academic entities. The testing service is performed in collaboration with external laboratories such as the Lerner Research Building at the Cleveland Clinic. Other collaborators are at Stanford and in Europe.

Our Story

Each year pharmaceutical companies spend millions of dollars to test drugs using in vitro models of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Flocel’s family of Dynamic In vitro Blood-Brain Barrier (DIV-BBB) products offer a unique and superior approach to this method by utilizing real human endothelial cells and the formation of tight junctions within its dynamic system, resulting in a physiologically accurate reflection of true BBB characteristics.

Version 2.0 of the DIV-BBB model boasts a highly-modular subsystem design that allows the user to assemble and modify their experimental setup in a manner most befitting their test-specific needs:

Overall, the DIV-BBB 2.0 enables more accurate pharmacokinetic and toxicological studies and reflects in vivo blood-brain barrier properties. Its replication of important endothelial cell-astrocyte interactions and ability to sustain up to four cell culture modules substantially reduces drug development cost and experimental time. In addition to BBB cell types, the cell culture modules allow for pericyte, epithelial and tumor cell growth.
