LEAP Cleveland

LEAP Cleveland LEAP's history is rooted in the Independent Living (IL) Movement, which has as its precursor the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

LEAP is a nonprofit agency that serves people with all types of disabilities and works to promote social change to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. LEAP understands that disability is a natural part of life, and all of LEAP's work is guided by the independent living philosophy, which emphasizes people's right to make choices for themselves.

Voting for individuals with disabilities can present its own set of challenges, from accessibility to privacy. LEAP Cleveland 's Program Support Specialist, Elizabeth Brassell, shares her experience voting with a disability. Check out what she had to say below ⬇️

"My name is Elizabeth, and I have been voting since I turned 18. Depending on the election and what’s going on in my life, I choose different ways to vote. For larger elections, I often vote by absentee ballot so I can take my time and carefully review each choice. This is not the same as absentee accessible voting.

In Ohio, absentee accessible voting is a specific option for voters with disabilities, whereas standard absentee voting is available to all registered voters. I chose the standard absentee ballot because that is what I am most comfortable with. For this, I work with a parent to physically fill out my ballot, but my vote is entirely my own, and my responses are never influenced. I never feel that my privacy is violated.

That being said, I still prefer going to my polling location because it helps me feel more connected to the process. Before Election Day, I download a sample ballot, fill it out, and review my responses. Then, on Election Day, I usually go mid-morning or mid-afternoon when it’s less crowded, often with one of my parents. My polling location is very accessible.

At check-in, my parent and I approach the desk together so they can help me retrieve my ID while we sign in. In the past, I had to wait for my parent to completely finish voting before they could assist me. This made me feel like a second-class citizen. But in the most recent election, trained poll workers assisted me directly, so I didn’t have to wait. They guided me to the accessible voting machine, helped me transfer my responses from my sample ballot to the official one, and supported me in reviewing and submitting my ballot. While I would prefer the process to be more private, I do appreciate the assistance.

When I finish, I proudly take my “I Voted” sticker and bring my sample ballot home to shred. Over time, I’ve learned that voting can be simple when I prepare ahead and ask for what I need.

If you are unsure, call your board of elections ahead of time to make sure accommodations are in place at your polling location. Don’t be afraid to ask who your polling location manager is. And most importantly, don’t let stigma or systemic challenges make you feel sidelined. You are part of the democratic process. Get out and vote!"

Living a Mission of Equality

LEAP's mission is to advance a society of equal opportunity for all persons, regardless of disability. We accomplish this mission in Northeast Ohio by:

  • Providing information, education, training, employment, and independent-living services to people with disabilities

  • Helping people with disabilities identify and eliminate barriers to employment and independent living in the areas of income support, access to health care, transportation, housing, personal care, and assistive technology

  • Promoting fully accessible and integrated communities so that all persons with disabilities can live, work, learn, shop, and socialize where they choose, without barriers, and
