Lakewood Chiropractic Clinic Lakewood Chiropractic Clinic About Doctor Van Oosten

"Growing up our family chiropractor taught us that chiropractic helps maintain wellness for a lifetime."

When Scott Van Oosten was nine years old his parents made a decision to take him to a chiropractor for treatment of asthma. Scott's father who specialized in medical sales made a decision to seek out alternative chiropractic care instead of having Scott undergo risky asthmatic treatment. That experience was a pivotal point in Dr. Van Oosten's decision to become a physician. Soon thereafter he was symptom free with his asthma. During high school a sports injury brought Scott back under chiropractic care and reinforced his desire to care in a chiropractic. For one year he volunteered at a local chiropractic office in Chesterland, Ohio. Dr. VanOosten grew up in West Geauga County near Cleveland and attended Cleveland State University with a focus in chemistry and biology. He then attended the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, Illinois where he earned a bachelor's degree of science in human biology. Dr. Van Oosten graduated from the National College of Chiropractic in December 1994. He is nationally board-certified and licensed in the state of Ohio since February 1995. He completed an internship at the Salvation Army in Chicago, Illinois. The doctor has worked in the greater Cleveland area since that time and has worked for Regional Diagnostics, the Collis Group, Horizon Orthopedics (Dr. Keppler) and currently owns Lakewood Chiropractic. He has held positions for the Northeast Ohio Chiropractic Association, the Ohio State Chiropractic Association and was an Adjunct Clinical Professor for the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. He has also taught anatomy at the Redfern School of Massotherapy. He resides with his family in the western suburbs of Cleveland and enjoys the variety of people he meets through his profession.

A few people sent in this question:

Are chiropractors real doctors? 😆 Oh, we have heard all the jokes...

As a chiropractor, I may not have the same medical degree as a traditional physician, but I'm definitely a spine-tuning expert. With my Doctor of Chiropractic degree and specialized knowledge in musculoskeletal care.

Chiropractors are the go-to professional for pesky back pain and other muscle and skeletal needs.

Common side effects you could experience can be:
Pain: The most common symptom, often felt in muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, or bones.

Stiffness: Limited range of motion or difficulty moving a joint, often accompanied by pain.

Swelling: Inflammation around the affected area, which can also cause redness and warmth.

Weakness: Difficulty using the affected muscles or joints due to pain, stiffness, or loss of strength.

Fatigue: Persistent tiredness or exhaustion, often resulting from chronic pain or the body's attempt to heal itself.

Mobility issues: Difficulty walking, standing, sitting, or performing daily activities.

Muscle spasms or cramps: Involuntary muscle contractions that can cause intense pain.

Numbness or tingling: Reduced sensation or a "pins and needles" feeling, often due to nerve compression or irritation.

Deformities: Changes in the appearance or alignment of bones or joints, which can affect function and mobility.

Sleep disturbances: Pain or discomfort making it difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position or stay asleep through the night.

People sometimes ask me why I got into chiropractic...
I tell them that I have always liked knowing that chiropractic can be a more holistic treatment for physical pain. It is a drug-free approach to healing the body. And I believe that it can offer a different kind of relief than traditional medicine.

I have seen firsthand how chiropractic treatment can improve a person's quality of life. Patients come to me with all kinds of physical ailments, ranging from back pain to headaches, and I am proud to be able to help them find relief through chiropractic care. Chiropractic is not only about treating physical pain but also about promoting overall health and wellness. By taking a holistic approach to healing, I can help my patients feel better and live healthier lives. With proper care, patients can experience improved mobility, better posture, and overall well-being. Chiropractic care is an invaluable tool for helping people reach their health goals.

If any of you have questions about chiropractic care, feel free to drop me a message, and I would be happy to reply. ❤️

SPRING IS COMING, I promise.
I've got a Spring wellness tip to share with you that can help you avoid needing to come in for an appointment.

So, with Spring almost here, you might be more active and spending more time outdoors. That's great! But all that activity can cause tightness and stiffness in your muscles and joints, and nobody wants that.

Here's the solution: start stretching! Stretching regularly can improve your flexibility, increase blood flow to your muscles, and help prevent injuries.

Don't worry, you don't need to be a yoga master to get started. Just take it slow and easy at first, and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your stretches. Focus on stretching all the major muscle groups in your neck, shoulders, back, hips, and legs.

Make stretching a part of your daily routine, whether it's stretching before or after a workout, or taking quick stretch breaks throughout the day. Hold each stretch for at least 20-30 seconds, and repeat 2-3 times.

Trust me, a little bit of stretching can go a long way in keeping you pain-free and feeling good. So, take care of your body, and have fun out there this Spring!

Hey, Dr. Scott here...
You know, I see a lot of patients who suffer from neck and shoulder pain. One of the main reasons for this pain is our modern lifestyle, where we spend hours sitting in front of computer screens. What many of us don't realize is the impact it has on our posture.

When we sit in front of our screens, our head starts to jut forward, changing the position of the supporting muscles of the neck and putting extra pressure on the vertebrae. Did you know that an additional 10 pounds of force is exerted onto the neck muscles and other structures for every inch of forward head posture? With the average head weighing around 10 pounds, even 1 inch of forward head posture can double the stress on the neck.

Over time, this can lead to muscle pain, fatigue, loss of range of motion in the neck, headaches, jaw pain, shoulder pain, early degeneration or disc disease, and even vision and mental clarity issues. It's tough to work with any of these symptoms. And it can be even harder to enjoy life outside of work when the pain persists.

So, how can we prevent this pain and discomfort? The first step is to become aware of our posture. Here's a quick checklist to help:

✸Keep your chin parallel to the floor
✸Keep your shoulders even
✸Maintain a neutral spine
✸Keep your arms at your sides with your elbows straight and even
✸Brace your abdominal muscles
✸Keep your hips even
✸Keep your knees even and point your straight ahead
✸Distribute your body weight evenly on both feet

💡 Remember to take breaks throughout the day to stretch and move around, especially if you're sitting for long periods of time.

Taking care of your posture today can help prevent pain and discomfort in the future. So, take a moment to consider your posture. Make the necessary adjustments to keep yourself feeling great! If you're experiencing any pain or discomfort, don't hesitate to reach out to me for an appointment. Let's work together to keep you feeling your best!
