Only an octogenarian man from the Acton family could have made my purple plush muppet skin grimace coat work better than I but my dad was iconic. It was maddening because they put him in timeout assisted living place while his broken arm amended and he was ornery and cold. He just wanted to go home. Could you blame him and also because he was a freeze baby. The best part of my memory bank involving the day in 2012 this photo was snapped? He apologized to my late brother for not getting his fashion sense once.
There was something validating by proxy getting to hear him give Bobby a posthumous bit of fashion props for a similar ensemble involving a fur coat he wore somewhere in the 70s. I think they went to see a show and it was a double date with my brother and his wife and my parents. Anytime I would embellish on something I permanently borrowed from my high school drama department door an upholsterer going out of business, etc., etc. my mom would remind me of this story And also that my little brother appreciated my kind of incongruity meats, ingenuity, offbeat sense of style. “ I didn’t realize that your brother could work a room in a coat more like a murdered mop or Sesame Street character than this thing I’m in , though he only wore at once.Once.”
I wondered if it was the fur coat from that story and he continued : “ Sometimes parents look at their children and the decisions that child makes and go to the worst case scenario crazy. Tasteless. And more often than not we have no idea what we’re looking at in that moment to put our endorsement on somebody else’s coat or their other lifestyle decisions. I was definitely incorrect and you know, your brother had some kind of a prosthetic mink fur piece coat once and I was incorrect on my first impression that he looked like a gay mercenary yeti in that thing because here I sit among these lovely ladies of all various and sundries, socioeconomic backgrounds and ages, nationalities races, Face and Damned if I don’t feel all eyes on me and I feel intriguing. I am the prettiest bastard in this facility and probably the only one who can also get off my ass and make a coffee without the use of a mobility aid though I’m supposed to …. I feel like a cross between Sean Connery and Prince right now. “. It was the first day of Aquarius season and I was laughing and laughing at my 81-year-old father having epiphany and he wasn’t kidding about everyone from the nurses aids employed there to a lady that was a decade, his senior who kept asking him for tea as in That drink a couple cups separately not that he needed to be the waiter. In that purple fascinator this effect was multiplied he was fascinating. One might say he was a warm amethyst. “Your brother was light years ahead of Elton John or Bowie and better looking than either of them with the Irish American face on him…..by far. Hope I didn’t ruin his coat because I speak before I understand something sometimes.” I hope not either because having a Sagittarius parent and I had two of them drawback an arrow with the passage of time can be remarkable healing but hell I wish he had that epiphany well my brother was able to hear him on this side of a great divide of an earth.
