WPSA1 Women's Prof Staff Assn The Women's Professional Staff Association (WPSA) is a networking & development resource for the women physicians on Cleveland Clinic's Professional Staff.

While the WPSA is an organization for the women on Cleveland Clinic's Professional Staff, WPSA also welcomes Cleveland Clinic House Staff, Cleveland Clinic Alumni, CWRU and CCLCM Medical Students and our regional and national colleagues in medicine to join us as well as our men colleagues at Cleveland Clinic. Amy Lightner, MD, Director of Center for Regenerative Medicine & Surgery
Associate Professor of Colorectal Surgery and Inflammation & Immunity was recruited to Cleveland Clinic for her surgical expertise in inflammatory bowel disease and to initiate clinical trials in stem cell therapy.
Her clinical interests include inflammatory bowel disease, in particular fistulizing disease & reconstructive pouch surgery.
Her academic interests include stem cell based therapy to treat the inflammatory bowel disease both locally and systemically.
She is currently doing laboratory based research and is conducting clinical trials to translate the bench work to the bedside.

Surgeon Sofya H. Asfaw MD FACS received a grant this past July to develop programming & mentorship for area Middle School kids with the goal being to expand the pool of eligible underrepresented healthcare professionals. The kids will spend a day with health professions students and faculty from affiliated Medical, Dental and Nursing schools to gain first-hand experience of what life is like as a healthcare professional.

New profile!

Swathi Appachi MD, Pediatric Otolaryngologist, received a Catalyst Grant in Jan 22, to develop a multidisciplinary Pediatric Voice Center designed to evaluate and treat pediatric patients with voice disorders. Her team has started offering this clinic monthly and are hoping to increase access now that they have purchased some necessary equipment and received IRB approval to start collecting data. Next steps include marketing and informing pediatric providers of this clinic.

Professor Margot Damaser PhD Dept of Biomedical Engineering, Lerner Research Institute, has been issued 6 patents & has several pending. Several of these patents are focused on a wireless catheter-free monitor for the bladder, the UroMonitor, which can unobtrusively monitor bladder function at home during activities of daily living. In 2022, she and her team successfully licensed this technology and are now working with the company to prepare it for clinical use. “moving ideas forward and advancing them to the marketplace is how we will improve the healthcare of patients”

Reena Mehra, MD MS FCCP FAASM FAHA ATSF, Professor of Medicine, Director of Sleep Disorders Research Clinic received a catalyst grant in Jan 2020 to use blood samples to study a genetic link between Alzheimer’s & sleep disruption. The grant served as a launching pad from which Dr Mehra & team will use the data generated to validate findings in a larger cohort and assess the impact of sleep and circadian rhythm-specific interventions on risk biomarkers identified in this work.

Anesthesiologist Sandra Machado, MD is featured today during Women in Medicine Month describing her two patents and the technology she has licensed through Cleveland Clinic Innovations.

“I realized that one of the biggest challenges in the management of acute decompensated cardiac patients is that most medications that enhance contractility have significant side effects. These side effects are the result of the lack of receptor specificity of these drugs. After a detailed review of the literature on cardiac innervation, I realized that the contractility fibers could be accessible through an endovascular route and neuromodulated to achieve a pure inotropic effect on the heart…”

Our first profile features Cleveland Clinic Pediatric Allergist Jackie Bjelac MD

In 2019 she received a grant to study the effectiveness of boiled peanut oral immunotherapy to safely treat children with peanut allergies.

“Food allergy treatments are an area of intense study, but many treatments are limited by side effects. There is some literature that cooking methods change the allergenicity of foods- we know that roasting makes foods more allergenic, and most peanut that is consumed in the US is roasted. When roasted peanut is used as a desensitization treatment, we often see many side effects due to allergenicity. One of my mentors in fellowship grew up in the southern US, where boiled peanuts are a common snack. He wondered if using boiled peanuts for this treatment would have better efficacy.” She and her team have completed the study and are anxiously awaiting the formal data analysis…

Dr. Sumita Khatri is a Professor of Medicine at Cleve Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Vice Chair of Cleve Clinic's Respiratory Institute, Director of Asthma Center & practicing Adult Pulmonary and ICU physician. She serves on the national board of the American Lung Association and is founder of FLEX, a leadership development program for women faculty of the CWRU School of Medicine.

📣 Jamak Modaresi Esfeh, MD, is Cleveland Clinic’s new Medical Director of Hepatology Transplant where she will oversee the transplant evaluation of potential candidates and assist to expedite the process of evaluation.

Dr. Modaresi earned her medical degree from the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical sciences, Tehran, Iran. She completed her psychiatry residency at Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2006 and completed her internal medicine residency at Cleveland Clinic in 2013. Dr. Modaresi then pursued two fellowships in both Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology at Cleveland Clinic.

The Women’s Professional Staff Association (WPSA) supports and advocates for the women appointed to the Professional Staff at Cleveland Clinic working in Ohio, Florida and Nevada. Women make up 37% of all the physicians, scientists, researchers and educators at Cleveland Clinic. WPSA’s programming is open to members and Cleveland Clinic’s women house staff and trainees, alumni, and retirees, Case Western Reserve University and and Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine medical students and our regional and national colleagues in medicine. Our page is a place for WPSA colleagues to share information about events and activities as well as current news and information related to women in medicine and science, leadership, career development and other topics of relevance.
