Heart disease remains leading cause of death as key health risk factors continue to rise. Fueled by ongoing increases in high blood pressure, obesity and other major risk factors, heart disease continues to kill more people in the U.S. than any other cause.

At Medstar, our EMTs and Paramedics teach practical, hands-on CPR and AED training designed for real life. No complicated language. No medical background required. Just clear instruction, realistic practice, and the confidence to step forward when it matters.

Medstar recently partnered and hosted Universal, Star and Huron Valley Ambulance services, in a Highly Communicable Infectious Disease preparedness course.
Presented by Corewell Health, the groups engaged in case studies, hands-on PPE donning and doffing exercises, breach management, and waste handling for Category A materials. The groups gained practical skills and confidence to safely manage suspected HCID patients in both pre-hospital and hospital settings.

Paramedic David Martinek and EMTs Rebecca Goutis and Gabby Henry were called "saviors" by a bilateral lung transplant patient they recently treated.

"On Wednesday, January 28th, I had an overwhelming coughing attack while doing a breathing exercise. Then suddenly I felt what was like a pop in my chess, and got this feeling of a heavy weight sitting on my chest.

At that point I could barely breath, and was struggling to take a breath. Immediately I knew I had a problem, so I quickly checked my oxygen percentage, which was 53%.
I called my case manager and then 911.

The Med Techs showed up very quickly, in about 5 minutes or so from my call. I explained my situation to them. They proceeded to calm me down, quickly get me on oxygen, do an EKG, and put a cuff on me to monitor my blood pressure.

I have two friendly dogs which the techs handled very well also, even using treats I have in the house, to bribe them into another room to get them out of the way, and prevent them from exiting the house when they moved me out the door.

They all showed the utmost respect to me, my dogs, and my house. They treated me like I was family, with great care, and concern. After they got me breathing better on oxygen, they proceeded to take me to Henry Ford Hospital, where the ER took over from there.

I can’t thank them enough as they saved my life that day, and I will always be internally grateful, as I consider them my Heroes.

Please send my sincere thanks to those fine techs for me, and let them know that was a job well done."

Medstar Paramedic Kylend Hetherington and EMT Anastasia Edmonds really impressed the mother of a 5-year old boy, who they recently transported.

She wrote: "I recently had to take an ambulance ride with my son on February 1st. We took a ride from McLaren Bay to Saginaw Covenant Hospital. I was impressed with their professionalism. They explained what was going to happen and were courteous and friendly. They immediately made myself and my son feel comfortable with the situation. They showed concern and compassion for my son during the difficult trip. The driver also called out as we were going to go over a railroad track so we could brace ourselves a little more. Overall, I was very impressed with the crew members. They made a difficult day easier with their friendly and courteous manner. I wanted to share this because I hope you recognize the valuable employees you have in your company. I will in the future recommend your company to my family and friends."

Medstar Paramedics Matt Gaunt and Kyle Rich helped dozens of plungers stay warm at the Fenton Polar Plunge. Teams of costumed plungers enjoyed a sunny day with temperatures in the teens to raise money for the Special Olympics of Michigan.

Special Olympics Michigan is helping to create a world that accepts and welcomes every single person regardless of ability or disability.

The Polar Plunge is the biggest fundraiser for Special Olympics Michigan. All funds raised by Plungers help Special Olympics Michigan provide year-round training and services to over 23,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities across the state.

The Polar Plunge is presented by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a movement of volunteers dedicated to increasing awareness and funds for Special Olympics Michigan athletes across the state.
