On November 2, 2025, Medstar Paramedics LaPorsha Jones and Joyce Chavis were dispatched for a patient who reported sudden left-arm tremors in Eastpointe. Upon their assessment, the team recognized that the patient was experiencing a stroke. They initiated advanced life support treatment and transported the patient to Henry Ford St. John.

While enroute, the crew notified the hospital of their assessment, and the hospital began preparing to receive the patient. Because of the crew’s notice, the patient bypassed the emergency department and was taken directly to CT, with a door-to-scan time of just 7 minutes. From arrival to treatment, the door-to-needle time was only 27 minutes, one of the fastest times the hospital’s stroke team has ever recorded.

When the patient arrived at the emergency department, her NIH Stroke Scale score was 4. Just a few days later, she was discharged with no neurological deficits!

As reported by the clinical leadership of the hospitals stroke team when presenting recognition certificates, this patient outcome is the direct result of care provided by LaPorsha and Joyce. Quick recognition, decisive treatment, and coordination with hospital partners allowed the patient to have no impact from what could have been a life-altering event.

Great care and service LaPorsha and Joyce!

Healthcare leaders from across Macomb County gathered Friday to recognize a milestone in emergency medical care: the first successful prehospital whole blood transfusion delivered by EMS in Macomb County. The recognition honored the Medstar clinicians whose actions on February 16 helped stabilize a critically ill patient before arrival at the hospital and highlighted a program nearly three years in the making.

Medstar paramedic Joe McHardy, paramedic supervisor Frank Simone, and EMT LeAnn Berlin were recognized for their care of a patient suffering from acute abdominal bleeding. When EMS arrived, the patient was pale, cool, and clammy with vital signs indicating severe shock. After quickly assessing the patient, paramedic McHardy requested a whole blood response. Paramedic supervisor Simone arrived on scene minutes later carrying the blood supply and immediately initiated a transfusion.

When the patient arrived at the hospital, her condition had improved significantly. Her vital signs had stabilized, her shock index had decreased by 50 percent, and her level of consciousness had returned to normal.

“We have been supportive of Medstar’s whole blood initiative and the protocol development from the outset, recognizing the impact it will have for patients in severe shock,” Dr. Anthony Colucci, Medical Director for the Henry Ford Macomb Emergency Department, said. “This administration of whole blood demonstrates how critical that capability is, not only for trauma patients but for medical patients with blood loss. It is an honor to be part of such an important advancement in Macomb County and to know we are among a small but growing number of EMS systems in the country bringing this level of care directly to patients.”

Debbie Condino, Executive Director of the Macomb County EMS Medical Control Authority, said the moment reflects years of work and commitment to advancing patient care in the county.

“I’m proud to recognize the EMS team who provided this groundbreaking care for the first patient,” Condino said. “I’m equally proud to have worked alongside Medstar to bring this three-year project through the planning stages, the investment, the training, and now into real patient care in our county. Seeing their commitment and dedication to delivering leading-edge treatment is truly inspiring.”

Medstar presented plaques to paramedics McHardy and Simone in recognition of their clinical leadership during the response.

Condino also presented certificates of recognition from the Medical Control Authority to the EMTs and paramedics involved in the response, recognizing their clinical judgment, rapid coordination, and the successful delivery of the first prehospital whole blood transfusion in Macomb County.

Recognition pins were also presented to EMT LeAnn Berlin, Medstar Whole Blood Coordinator Lori Peterson and Clinical Quality Manager Tom Barry, and Henry Ford Macomb Director of Emergency Services and Macomb County Medical Control Authority Board Member Kristin Slatkin for their roles in developing and implementing the program.

We recently received thank-you cards from the daughter of a patient who was taken home from hospice by Alexia Morgan and Jessica Swartzendruber. The patient’s daughter was so appreciative of Alexia and Jessica and had the following to say to them:
“Your kindness and compassion granted my ailing father his desire to be in his room when he transitioned. The courage and determination in determining what was best for my father will never be forgotten. The thank-you he spoke after he was in his bed, after not speaking for days, was a reassurance that you and your partner serve with sympathy and genuine care for your patients. You deserve this recognition and so much more. Please continue making a difference in the lives of those who need excellent service. Too often, those who go over and beyond to help others are overlooked. There aren't enough thank you’s I can give to show my gratitude for your hard work, compassion, and dedication to the lives of patients. Please stay true to what's necessary for the lives of the sick.”

Heart disease remains leading cause of death as key health risk factors continue to rise. Fueled by ongoing increases in high blood pressure, obesity and other major risk factors, heart disease continues to kill more people in the U.S. than any other cause.

At Medstar, our EMTs and Paramedics teach practical, hands-on CPR and AED training designed for real life. No complicated language. No medical background required. Just clear instruction, realistic practice, and the confidence to step forward when it matters.

Medstar recently partnered and hosted Universal, Star and Huron Valley Ambulance services, in a Highly Communicable Infectious Disease preparedness course.
Presented by Corewell Health, the groups engaged in case studies, hands-on PPE donning and doffing exercises, breach management, and waste handling for Category A materials. The groups gained practical skills and confidence to safely manage suspected HCID patients in both pre-hospital and hospital settings.

Paramedic David Martinek and EMTs Rebecca Goutis and Gabby Henry were called "saviors" by a bilateral lung transplant patient they recently treated.

"On Wednesday, January 28th, I had an overwhelming coughing attack while doing a breathing exercise. Then suddenly I felt what was like a pop in my chess, and got this feeling of a heavy weight sitting on my chest.

At that point I could barely breath, and was struggling to take a breath. Immediately I knew I had a problem, so I quickly checked my oxygen percentage, which was 53%.
I called my case manager and then 911.

The Med Techs showed up very quickly, in about 5 minutes or so from my call. I explained my situation to them. They proceeded to calm me down, quickly get me on oxygen, do an EKG, and put a cuff on me to monitor my blood pressure.

I have two friendly dogs which the techs handled very well also, even using treats I have in the house, to bribe them into another room to get them out of the way, and prevent them from exiting the house when they moved me out the door.

They all showed the utmost respect to me, my dogs, and my house. They treated me like I was family, with great care, and concern. After they got me breathing better on oxygen, they proceeded to take me to Henry Ford Hospital, where the ER took over from there.

I can’t thank them enough as they saved my life that day, and I will always be internally grateful, as I consider them my Heroes.

Please send my sincere thanks to those fine techs for me, and let them know that was a job well done."
